12:08 Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao, welcomed everyone and lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
12:09 President, Joe Stewart, came to the lectern, recognized Alfred’s daughters as guests, and introduced Don Wiggins as the Toastmaster…”We have a veteran TM as our Toastmaster today.”
12:10 Don welcomed Alfred’s daughters as guests, asked them how many times they had visited our club…”Two times”…”That makes you eligible for Table Topics!” Don introduced the theme: Seasons Come and Seasons Go and the WOW: Variegated. Don ran down the line up to make sure all spots were filled and let us know who was doing what.
12:13 Don introduced the Educational Moment- Doug Goodman.
12:14 Doug came to the lectern to deliver an Educational Moment on Club Formats. He talked about the different ways different clubs do things: Some clubs, like ours, allow everyone to join. Some clubs are set up within an organization and allow only members or employees of that establishment to join such as Singles, Military, Men Only, ATM and Above, and SDG&E in the beginning. He also talked about the different times clubs meet:Some meet for breakfast, some for lunch, some for dinner, some meet at 7am and don’t eat, some meet at 7pm and don’t eat. Some hold their meeting for an hour, others meet for 90 minutes, and still others meet for two hours. Those clubs that meet for 90 minutes or more get to participate in a business meeting and experience parliamentary procedure. Lastly, he quickly talked about all the areas where Toastmasters was available.
12:18 Don was welcomed back to the lectern and expounded a little on the variegated styles of the various Toastmasters clubs.12:20 Don introduced Joe Stewart to lead us in a round of Table Topics: Joe began by mentioning our theme, Seasons Come and Seasons Go, then told us Table Topics would not be based so much on the changing seasons, but more closely related to Chinese seasonings. He then gave everyone a fortune cookie and said those who are called on will open their cookie, read their fortune and tells us how that “fortune” relates to them.
Jimmie Webb - ”Be more sensitive of other’s feelings.” He had been spending too much time at Century Park and not enough time at home with his family, so he’s been working on it and doing better.Alfred Balagtas - ”A visit from a friend-some come and some travel.” He always enjoys visiting with friends. Sometimes they come to him, other times he travels to visit with them.Dee Williams - ”Expand your views, the possibilities are endless.” She felt she had been focusing too much on her own life and that it was time for her to “move out of the box”. She agreed that she needs to expand her views and discover new things.Martin Olmeda - ”Glory is reached by many different roads.” He agreed this is true and used the examples of Alfred’s love for his family and Dee’s need to step out of her box to illustrate that we each have different desires and things that are important to us.
Jose de la Torre - ”Count your blessings today.” “I haven’t yet today” but had been in Minnesota recently where the seasons are changing and he was able to take time to appreciate all the fall colors and the opportunity to see his family. He recognized how blessed he was.
12:30 Joe asked all to vote for the Best Table Topics Speaker and welcomed the Toastmaster back to the lectern. Don mentioned our changing seasons pointing out that we are in Fall as well, then shared with us our weather forecast for the week is supposed to be in the 80’s!
12:31 Don introduced the 1st speaker - Hannah Zhao...she was born in China, works at the Coastal Credit Union, and loves to ski. She gave her ATMB-7. She was to give a fact-finding speech in which she would present a problem that required research, that she was interested in, and had her own opinion about. Her time was 8-10 and her title was Chinese Currency.
12:32 Hannah shared with us the recent history of monetary dealings between the United States and China. She shared the information she had gathered to demonstrate why there is a trade deficit between China and the US. She expressed her opinion courageously and did an excellent job on a tough assignment.
12:45 The Toastmaster introduced Stephen Jaworski as the General Evaluator. Stephen began by talking briefly on our seasons and masterfully got the WOW in a couple of times.
12:46 Stephen introduced Jim Tucker to evaluate Hannah’s speech. Then he asked Dee Williams if she would like to evaluate the speech that was not given. Dee replied, “It was great, just a little short.” Alfred was asked to give the Grammarian/Ah Counter’s report and Jose gave the Timer’s report.
12:53 Stephen evaluated the meeting: We’ve been starting our meetings late a lot lately. Recognized that we’re all busy, but we really need to make the effort to arrive on time. If there’s anything the officer’s can do to facilitate this or anything we can do as members to help set up the room, we should all help to get our meetings started on time. Stephen loved Joe’s Table Topics with the cookies and Doug’s Educational Moment on the variegated choices we have when choosing a Toastmasters Club.
12:55 Don came back to the lectern, gave awards for Best Table Topics and Best Speaker, thanked the guests for being with us, and welcomed the president to the lectern.
12:57 Joe announced the Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests this Saturday, 2:30pm, at Solar Turbines. There will be food. Also reminded those who have not paid dues yet-need to. Martin Olmeda announced the chartering of a new club-”Like No Other Speakers” at the Sony Corporation. Martin was the sponsor, Jim Tucker was on the team as well. Joe pointed out that Martin had just finished a Speech Craft with the Charger Girls.
1:00 The meeting was adjourned.
