O Theme: My Best Money Tip
O W.O.W.: lucrative, adj: producing wealth; profitable

• Jose welcomed Jackie Lyons for an educational moment on being a GPS Financial Navigator. She spoke about the ten commandments for living well, some of which can be applied to Toastmasters. Some examples include creating a written plan, having an emergency cash fund, saving for big ticket items and education evaluate insurance coverage, plan for retirement, and ask yourself the right questions.

• Jose started the speaker portion of the meeting and introduced the scheduled speaker:
O Speaker #1, Byron Shovlain gave his first speech for the ATM –Bronze track titled "The Effective Salesperson." The purpose was persuasive speaking. Byron spoke about focusing on the buyer, creating value, listening to the customer, and obtaining a commitment to purchase. Byron clearly demonstrated these skills with an impromptu interaction with Liz. He set up a scenario where he was the salesperson at Nordstrom and Elizabeth was the customer. He then asked for feedback from the audience.

• VP of Education Brenda Gettig led a unique and fun round of Table Topics with a color theme. She had each person choose a piece of paper from a bag. The paper had a name of a color written on it. She asked that the color be incorporated into the response.
O Rob Cross: Imagine that your house is painted this color, what would your neighbors think? Hot Magenta
O Jackie Lyons: Your entire wardrobe is in this color, what does that say about you? Electric Lime
O Jennifer Ebner: Your cubicle is covered in this color, how does it affect your co-workers? Neon Carrot

Meeting Minutes - October 31, 2007

The ghostly meeting was called to order at 12:10pm and was attended by 12 mad hatters and spooky members: Zorro Matt Greenbergs, Jennifer Ebner, Ferdonya Henderson, Brenda Gettig, Wicked Witch of the West Darcy Konold, Jim Tucker, Byron Shovlain, Jackie Lyons, Jose de la Torre, Devil Rhonda Walthall, Rastafarian Rob Cross, Doug Goodman, Witch Barbara Nedd, and 1 guest, Geisha Rebecca Dohren.

• Matt called the meeting to order and introduced Doug Goodman as Toastmaster.

• Doug welcomed members and brought extra hats for those without costumes. He introduced the word of the week (W.O.W) and theme and asked everyone to introduce themselves saying what their hat represents.
O Theme: Halloween Party (wear a hat or come in costume)
O W.O.W.: fungible, adjective: 1) freely exchangeable for or replaced by another of like nature or kind in the satisfaction of an obligation; 2) interchangeable.

• Educational Moment was skipped

• Doug started the speaker portion of the meeting and introduced the scheduled speakers:
O Speaker #1, VP of Public Relations, Rhonda Walthall gave an advanced manual speech titled "Evading the Witch" with the purpose of sharing a personal story and entertaining the audience. Rhonda and her husband were forced to evacuate from their home due to the recent San Diego Witch fire. They packed up their pets, photographs, and took pictures of their recent home remodel. She even had to wear ski goggles due to the smoke. Fortunately, the fire did not impact their home and they successfully evaded the witch.

O Speaker #2, VP of Membership, Barbara Nedd gave her CC-4 speech titled "In Search of Delectable Treats." She spoke about her pursuit of baking a fabulous apple pie for her son’s school party. Barbara was apprehensive about baking since her strength is in cooking. By modifying the secret ingredient of extra sugar, her apple pie was a hit with the family and the kids at school.

• General Evaluator Byron Shovlain introduced the speech evaluators:
O Evaluator #1, VP of Education Brenda Gettig evaluated Rhonda’s speech. Brenda noted that Rhonda tied the introduction and conclusion together very well and commented that the prop may have limited her gestures.
O Evaluator #2, Treasurer Jose de la Torre evaluated Barbara’s speech. He noted the good word usage throughout the speech and recommended changing the title of the speech to reflect the content.

• Darcy Konold was the Table Topics Master and incorporated the Halloween theme into her questions:

Meeting Minutes - October 17, 2007

Sergeant-at-Arms Ferdonya Henderson opened up the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and then introduced President Matt Greenbergs who brought his children on break from school. Next Brenda Gettig did a good job as last minute Toastmaster fill in. Brenda introduced the Theme of Living on the Edge and the WOW of Gauche. Always good to learn about members and how they live on the edge. Brenda also gave the educational moment about being nervous is not such a bad thing, just be in the moment.

World famous speaker Jim Tucker gave all of us relevant speech topics in his speech about topics that will "blow your audience’s mind". Good sources of speech starters are such things as wrist bands with words or symbolism that you can pontificate upon. Another great source is carrying a note pad for writing down the occurrences of everyday life. For example, Jim saw a young girl who reminded her dad that he couldn’t buy clothes without mommy. Writing down such occurrences doesn’t let you forget. Jim then broke out his high school yearbook and re-visited memories and read from Longfellow a quote that was his school motto. He finally showed a photo from a scrapbook memory of an astronaut he shared the stage with.

Today was Rhonda Walthall’s birthday and as Table Topics Master she used her bag of goodies to ask participants to use the object to start a speech. Ferdonya had the luck of picking an indecipherable object that she made into an all purpose remote control. Doug Goodman pulled out a propeller/letter opener and pitched like a snake oil salesman. Stephanie Love-Payne did an excellent demonstration of a back massager on yours truly. Rob Cross pulled a book about painted cats and segued into Andrew Carnegie’s relaxation techniques. Young Jonathan Greenbergs grabbed a jar opener and proceeded to spin a winner of a tale.

Ferdonya further took on the job of General Evaluator. Doug did an excellent job of evaluating Jim’s speech using the COD (content, organization, and delivery) method. Doug hit on elements such as getting audience response, affirmation, rhetorical questions, stories, quotes, and examples. Rob Cross was Ah counter, and Barbara Nedd was timer. Doug won best evaluator and Jim best speaker. Elizabeth Lee, Byron Shovlain (Meeting minutes), and Angela Bonner were also in attendance.
