Meeting Minutes - October 10, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 12:10pm and was attended by 12 members: Matt Greenbergs, Molly Frisbie, Jennifer Ebner, Elizabeth Lee, Ferdonya Henderson, Brenda Gettig, Karen Shephard, Darcy Konold, Jim Tucker, Don Wiggins, Byron Shovlain, and Jackie Lyons. • Sergeant-at-Arms Ferdonya Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced President Matt Greenbergs. • Matt called the meeting to order, read the mission statement, and introduced Ferdonya Henderson as Toastmaster. • Ferdonya welcomed members and introduced the word of the week (W.O.W) and theme and asked everyone to introduce themselves using the theme or W.O.W. O Theme: From the Heart O W.O.W.: flibbertigibbet, noun: a silly, flighty, or scatterbrained person, especially a pert young woman with such qualities. • Ferdonya welcomed Secretary Jennifer Ebner for an educational moment titled "Keeping Your Evaluation on Target." Jennifer explained the 3 main points of an evaluation: analysis, recommendation, and encouragement. She also mentioned the three gatekeepers: Is it true? Is it necessary? and Is it kind? • Ferdonya started the speaker portion of the meeting and introduced the scheduled speaker: O Speaker #1, Area Governor Darcy Konold gave her ATM-4 speech from the Speaking to Inform manual. She spoke about her family background which is Hawaiian and Korean and told the history of the hula and the transition from the ancient hula (Kahiko hula) to the modern hula (‘Auana Hula). Darcy held a Q&A session about her topic answering questions about why the hula was banned and when it is performed. Darcy is a hula teacher (Kumu Hula) and did a beautiful performance of the hula. • Table Topics were skipped due to time constraints. • VP of Education, Brenda Gettig was introduced as the General Evaluator. Brenda introduced her team of evaluators: O Byron Shovlain evaluated Darcy’s speech. O Jackie Lyons provided the Grammarian/Ah counter’s report for the first time. O Elizabeth Lee provided the Timer’s report for the first time. O Brenda provided an overview of the meeting. • The "Best of" awards were presented by Brenda: O Best Speaker: Darcy Konold O Best Evaluator: Byron Shovlain • Announcements: O October 13th, Central Division Tall Tales and Table Topics Contest at Cymer Inc. The meeting was called to order at 12:06pm and was attended by 14 members: Matt Greenbergs, Doug Goodman, Stephanie Love-Payne, Molly Frisbie, Lee Moran, Jennifer Ebner, Elizabeth Lee, Ferdonya Henderson, Brenda Gettig, Karen Shephard, Rob Cross, Darcy Konold, Jimmie Webb, Jose de la Torre and 1 guest: Angela Bonner. • Sergeant-at-Arms Ferdonya Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced VP of Education and acting President Brenda Gettig. • Brenda called the meeting to order and introduced Secretary Jennifer Ebner as Toastmaster. • Jennifer welcomed members and guest and introduced the word of the week (W.O.W) and theme and asked everyone to introduce themselves using the theme by talking about a time in their life when there was an opportunity for a new beginning. O Theme: New Beginnings O W.O.W.: bellicose; inclined or eager to fight; aggressively hostile; belligerent; pugnacious. • Jennifer welcomed Ferdonya Henderson for an educational moment on Introductions. Ferdonya explained the T – I – S method for introductions. T – Topic, I – Importance, S – Speaker. Utilizing these three areas will make for a good introduction. • Jennifer started the speaker portion of the meeting and introduced the scheduled speakers: O Speaker #1, Elizabeth Lee gave her CC-1 Icebreaker speech titled "Experience is a Teacher." Elizabeth shared her life experiences about marriage, children, education, career and overcoming difficulties along the way. O Speaker #2, Brenda Gettig gave her CC-8 researched information speech titled "Social Security for You." She spoke about retirement income and the current state of Social Security benefits and how to obtain additional information on benefits online. She detailed the various retirement ages and how your benefits are affected by the age you retire at. • Jennifer introduced Treasurer Jose de la Torre as Table Topics Master. Jose called on the following individuals to speak: O Rob Cross: did the movie Fahrenheit 911 help Bush win the last election? O Karen Shepard: was the movie Passion of the Christ in your opinion based on reality? O Lee Moran: were Enron executives at fault for the energy crisis as portrayed in The Smartest Guys in the Room? • Jennifer introduced Doug Goodman as the General Evaluator. O Theme: If I Won the Lottery O W.O.W.: levity 1) lightness of manner or speech; frivolity 2) lack of steadiness or constancy; changeableness. • Doug welcomed Molly Frisbie for an educational moment on "The Biggest Public Speaking Mistakes." Molly researched a top ten list: 10) Starting a speak with a whimper 9) Imitating others 8) Failure to work the room 7) Failure to use relaxation techniques 6) Reading speeches word for word 5) Using someone else’s story 4) Speaking without passion 3) Ending a speech with question and answers 2) Failing to prepare 1) Failing to realize speaking is an acquired skill. • Doug started the speaker portion of the meeting and introduced the scheduled speaker: O Speaker #1, Lee Moran gave his CC-1 Icebreaker speech. Lee shared his past, present, and future goals. He explained his interests in sports, education, music, and travel. He also shared his family background and tales of working on a cruise ship. • Doug introduced VP of Education, Brenda Gettig as Table Topics Master. Brenda called on the following individuals to speak and incorporated the theme in some of the topics: O Elizabeth Lee: what would you do with $10M? O Karen Shepard: what does only your best friend know about you? O Maury Tasem: talk about waking up one day to find yourself in a different body. O Rhonda Walthall: if you had a super power for 24 hours, what would it be? O Ferdonya Henderson: imagine you won $10M, how would life have changed one year later? • Doug introduced VP of Public Relations, Rhonda Walthall as the General Evaluator. Rhonda introduced her team of evaluators: O Stephanie Love-Payne evaluated Lee’s speech O Ferdonya Henderson provided the Grammarian/Ah counter’s report O Jennifer Ebner provided the Timer’s report O Rhonda provided a detailed overview of the meeting • The "Best of" awards were presented by Doug: O Best Speaker: Lee Moran O Best Table Topics: Elizabeth Lee O Best Evaluator: Stephanie Love-Payne • Doug asked for announcements. She asked everyone to introduce themselves and use the theme or word of the week (W.O.W.). O Theme: Diversity O W.O.W.: reciprocate 1) to give or take mutually; interchange 2) to show, feel, or give in response or return. • Brenda welcomed Stephanie Love-Payne for an educational moment on "Handling a Hostile Crowd." Stephanie explained hostile crowds as people that act out in disruptive ways, whether they are argumentative, heckling, or talking amongst themselves. She recommended knowing your audience and planning your speech for an ideal time of day • Brenda started the speaker portion of the meeting and introduced the scheduled speakers: O Speaker #1, Doug Goodman gave a speech on Cedar trees. He gave us some insight into his experience in the tree harvesting business. Speaking about how diversity in the tree world is not always good. Specifically how hard it is to eliminate the cedar trees because they do not decay or rot like other types of trees. O Speaker #2, Jennifer Ebner gave her CC-5 titled "Car versus Deer" utilizing body language for the purpose of the speech. She told a story of a weekend gone awry and how she was involved in a car accident with a deer and the events that followed. • Brenda introduced Ferdonya Henderson as the General Evaluator. Ferdonya introduced her team of evaluators: O Byron Shovlain evaluated Doug’s speech and noted his natural storytelling ability along with good use of gestures and body language O Molly Frisbie evaluated Jennifer’s speech.
