Meeting Minutes - September 12, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 12:05pm and was attended by ten members: Ferdonya Henderson, Matt Greenbergs, Stephanie Love-Payne, Doug Goodman, Don Wiggins, Jim Tucker, Barbara Nedd, Darcy Konold, Brenda Gettig, and Jose de la Torre. One guest attended: Karen Shephard.

· Sergeant-at-Arms Ferdonya Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced President Matt Greenbergs.
· Matt called the meeting to order and turned the meeting back to Ferdonya as Toastmaster.
· Ferdonya welcomed members and guests. She asked everyone to introduce themselves and speak about how Toastmasters had helped them experience “Victory over Circumstances” (the theme for the week). She also introduced the word of the week, trenchant.
· Don Wiggins presented an educational moment.
· There was one speaker for this week’s meeting, Jim Tucker. Jim’s motivational speech included three elements for better speaking: perception, perspective and performance.
· Doug Goodman acted as Table Topics Master. Jose de lat Torre, Matt Greenbergs and Jim Tucker were asked to speak during Table Topics.
· Ferdonya introduced Matt Greenbergs as the General Evaluator. Matt’s team of evaluators included the following:
o Darcy Konold presented an evaluation of Jim’s speech,
o Stephanie Love-Payne presented the Grammarian / Ah Counter report,
o Barbara Nedd presented the Timer’s report, and
o Brenda Gettig completed a leadership evaluation for Darcy.
· The “Best of” awards were presented by Ferdonya to the following members:
o Best Speaker: Jim Tucker
o Best Table Topics: Matt Greenbergs
o Best Evaluator: Darcy Konold
· Ferdonya asked Karen to comment on the meeting as this was her second visit. Karen explained she was very happy with the club and intended to become a member.
· Ferdonya turned the meeting back over to Matt who adjourned the meeting around 1:00 pm.

Meeting Minutes - September 5, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 12:05pm and was attended by 14 members: Matt Greenbergs, Jennifer Ebner, Jim Tucker, Stephanie Love-Payne, Doug Goodman, Barbara Nedd, Rob Cross, Hannah Zhao, Don Wiggins, Jose de la Torre, Ferdonya Henderson, Brenda Gettig, Byron Shovlain, Elizabeth Lee and 2 guests: Holly and Karen.

• Sergeant-at-Arms Ferdonya Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced President Matt Greenbergs.

• Matt called the meeting to order and introduced Treasurer, Jose de la Torre as Toastmaster.

• Jose welcomed members and guests. He asked the guests how they heard about the club. Holly found the club through the website and Karen is a guest of Don Wiggins. Jose introduced the word of the week (W.O.W.) and theme. He explained the shoestring issues he has in his life and asked everyone to share similar situations in their life.
O Theme: Family Matters
O W.O.W.: shoestring – noun, 1) shoelace, 2) small sum of money / capital inadequate or barely adequate to the needs of a transaction.

• Jose welcomed Sergeant-at-Arms, Ferdonya Henderson, for an educational moment. Ferdonya spoke about editing or rewriting a speech. She suggested looking for unnecessary words and to use an action voice and energy to improve a speech.

• Jose started the speaker portion of the meeting and introduced the scheduled speaker:
O Speaker #1, Rob Cross gave his CC-9 persuasive speech, "Stop Drinking the Poison." He noted that 5 out of 7 people are angry about something in their lives. He explained what bitterness is and why it is bad and went through ways to get rid of it. He gave an example of Sunny Jacobs who was an innocent person that was jailed for 17 years that learned to forgive and move on with her life after prison.

• Jose introduced Secretary, Jennifer Ebner as the Table Topics Master. Jennifer incorporated the theme of the week into table topics and asked the guests if they would like to participate.
O Don Wiggins was asked to speak about his ideal family vacation.
O Karen was asked to tell us a time that things did not go right on a family vacation.
O VP of Membership, Barbara Nedd spoke about the television programs that she enjoys watching with her children.
O Byron Shovlain spoke about the tradition his family has with going on cruises together.
O Jim Tucker spoke about his role and place in his family.
O Holly spoke about how personality traits are somewhat influenced by if you are the oldest, youngest, or only child in your family.

• Jose introduced Jim Tucker as the General Evaluator. Jim introduced his team of evaluators:
O VP of Education, Brenda Gettig evaluated Rob’s speech and noted the good use of examples and props.
O Barbara Nedd provided the Grammarian/Ah counter’s report O Stephanie Love-Payne provided the Timer’s report O Jim provided an overview of the meeting

• The "Best of" awards were presented by Jose:
O Best Speaker: Rob Cross
O Best Table Topics: Don Wiggins
O Best Evaluator: Brenda Gettig

• Jose asked the guests for input on the meeting. A reminder was made about the upcoming membership period that starts on October 1st. Get those dues in early!

• Jose turned the meeting back over to Matt who adjourned the meeting at 1:02pm.

Meeting Minutes - August 29, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 12:04pm and was attended by 12 members: Rhonda Walthall, Jennifer Ebner, Stephanie Love-Payne, Molly Frisbie, Doug Goodman, Darcy Konold, Hannah Zhao, Jose de la Torre, Ferdonya Henderson, Brenda Gettig, Byron Shovlain, and Elizabeth Lee.

· Sergeant-at-Arms Ferdonya Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced acting and immediate past President Rhonda Walthall.
· Rhonda called the meeting to order and introduced Molly Frisbie as Toastmaster.
· Molly welcomed members and introduced the word of the week (W.O.W.) and theme. She explained how the ocean tides are affected by the moon and how full moons are often associated with strange occurrences some of which are based on folklore, misperceptions, and bias. Molly asked for self introductions by stating your name and describing what is askew in your life when there is a full moon.
o Theme: Full Moon
o W.O.W.: askew – adjective, out of line: awry.
· Molly welcomed Sergeant-at-Arms, Ferdonya Henderson, for an educational moment. Ferdonya spoke about all the resources that are available within Toastmasters. There are manuals, handouts, and guidelines for practically any position/role that you can think of. Whether it is for an officer position or a meeting role (Evaluator, Toastmaster, etc…). She encouraged more volunteering for positions because you can always find information to help you along.
· Molly started the speaker portion of the meeting and introduced the scheduled speakers:
o Speaker #1, Rhonda Walthall completed her CL-8 project on the “Importance of Membership the Club.” Rhonda kicked off the membership campaign and explained the importance of retaining 20 or more members within the Toastmaster’s club along with bringing in new members for new perspectives and ideas. She explained the goals for the Distinguished Club Program and detailed the organizational structure of Toastmasters with the member being the focus of it all.
o Speaker #2, Darcy Konold gave her CC-5 “The Scoop, the Whole Scoop, and Nothing but the Scoop.” She explained what a High Performance Leadership Project entails and how to effectively complete it: recruit a guidance committee; study the learning materials; select a project; work with team to accomplish the goal; and give a presentation to your club. She encouraged studying the manual and workbooks obtained through Toastmasters prior to starting the project.
· Molly introduced Byron Shovlain as the Table Topics Master. Byron incorporated the theme of the week into table topics. He called on Jennifer Ebner to speak on full moon celebrations. Doug Goodman was asked to speak on the Harvest Moon. Stephanie Love-Payne was asked to speak on what is askew during a full moon for her. Elizabeth Lee was asked to speak on the moon cakes.
· Molly introduced Doug Goodman as the General Evaluator. Doug introduced her team of evaluators:
o No evaluation for Rhonda’s leadership project
o Jose de la Torre evaluated Darcy’s speech
o Jennifer Ebner provided the Grammarian/ah counter’s report
o Brenda Gettig provided the Timer’s report
o Doug provided an overview of the meeting
· The “Best of” awards were presented by Molly:
o Best Speaker: Rhonda Walthall
o Best Table Topics: Doug Goodman
o Best Evaluator: Doug Goodman
· Molly asked Rhonda for an overview of the Area 5 Contest that was held the previous weekend. Congratulations to Ferdonya and Matt!
o Ferdonya Henderson placed 2nd in the Tall Tales
o Matt Greenbergs placed 2nd in Table Topics.
· Rhonda notified everyone that Judge training is held Sept. 5th, 6:30pm at the Bonita Library
• Meeting was adjourned at 1:00pm.

The meeting was called to order at 12:07pm and was attended by 12 members: Rhonda Walthall, Lee Moran, Jennifer Ebner, Matt Greenbergs, Stephanie Love-Payne, Molly Frisbie, Doug Goodman, Rob Cross, Cece Rowe, Darcy Konold, Hannah Zhao, Jose de la Torre and 1 guest: Eric Johnson

· Secretary Jennifer Ebner led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced club President Matt Greenbergs.
· Matt called the meeting to order and introduced Doug Goodman as Toastmaster.
· Doug welcomed guest and members and gave a brief history of Century Toastmasters club 9273. “92” represents the year the club was started. Doug helped get the club started when he was an SDG&E employee. Doug introduced the word of the week (W.O.W.), theme, and asked for self introductions by stating your name and using the W.O.W.
o Theme: Dancing with Life
o W.O.W.: estival – adjective, of or relating to summer.
· Doug welcomed VP of Public Relations, Rhonda Walthall, for an educational moment called “Jungle Fever.” Rhonda reminded everyone about the upcoming Area contest on August 25th. She also explained the organizational structure of Toastmasters: Member, Club, Area, Division, District, Region, International.
· Doug started the speaker portion of the meeting and introduced the scheduled speakers:
o Speaker #1, Hannah Zhao gave an ATM speech, project #3 Moral of the Story from the Storytelling manual called “The Cracked Pot.” The moral of the story was that what can be seen as a flaw can actually be a positive trait and to look for good within ourselves. She taught us this through the story of a Chinese woman that had carried water in 2 pots, one was cracked and one was whole. Unknowingly, the cracked (flawed) pot had watered her neighbor’s flowers, which brought happiness to her neighbor’s life.
o Speaker #2, Stephanie Love-Payne gave her CC-2 Organize Your Speech on centenarians. Centenarians are people who have attained the age of 100 years or older. Stephanie shared many facts and figures on the growing population of centenarians and shared stories of the oldest living person to date, Jeanne Louise Calment.
· Doug introduced Darcy Konold as the Table Topics Master. Darcy incorporated the theme of the week into table topics. She called on Matt to speak on what dance best describes his life. Lee Moran spoke about a song that describes his life. Rhonda Walthall spoke about a song that describes the pace of life. Hannah Zhao spoke about a costume that best represents her life.
· Rhonda introduced Molly Frisbie as the General Evaluator. Molly introduced her team of evaluators:
o Jennifer Ebner evaluated Hannah’s speech
o Cece Rowe’s evaluation of Stephanie’s speech was skipped
o Darcy Konold provided the Grammarian/ah counter’s report
o Rob Cross provided the Timer’s report
· The “Best of” awards were presented by Doug:
o Best Table Topics: Lee Moran
o Best Evaluator: Jennifer Ebner
o Best Speaker: Hannah Zhao
· Doug asked for announcements and filled in the remaining positions for next week’s meeting.
• Doug turned the meeting back over to President, Matt, who adjourned the meeting at 1:01pm.
