Meeting Minutes - August 15, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 12:05pm and was attended by 8 members: Rhonda Walthall, Don Wiggins, Lee Moran, Jennifer Ebner, Elizabeth Lee, Ferdonya Henderson, Matt Greenbergs, Stephanie Love-Payne, 2 previous members: Molly Frisbie and Byron Shovlain, and 1 guest: Debbie.

· Sergeant at Arms Ferdonya Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced club President Matt Greenbergs.
· Matt called the meeting to order and introduced Rhonda Walthall as Toastmaster.
· Rhonda welcomed guest and members and introduced the word of the week (W.O.W.), theme, and asked for self introductions by stating your name, using the W.O.W. or talking about your best friend, and stating any role you are holding in the meeting.
o Theme: My Best Friend
o W.O.W.: confabulation – noun 1. familiar talk; easy, unrestrained, unceremonious conversation. 2. a plausible but imagined memory that fills in the gaps in what is remembered.
· Rhonda welcomed Matt for an educational moment about evaluations. Matt spoke about the important of evaluations which is based on content, organization (introduction, body, and conclusion), and delivery. Evaluations are a great way to help us improve our speeches.
· Rhonda started the scheduled speaker portion of the meeting and reminded everyone about completing the Competent Leadership (CL) track along with any other speaking manual.
o Speaker #1, Ferdonya Henderson gave an ATM speech on a controversial issue titled “Chocolate and Antioxidants.” Ferdonya told us about the pros and cons of consuming chocolate and how to maximize the benefits from chocolate, particularly by consuming dark chocolate that is organic and has 70% or higher cocoa. She opened up the floor for a question and answer session with several questions from the audience.
o Speaker #2, Don Wiggins gave a speech to sell a product titled “30 Seconds Difference Maker.” Don started off with a demonstration of incandescent versus compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs and how much less energy the CFL bulbs consume. Don covered the many benefits of using CFL bulbs and how energy consumption can be reduced. He passed around examples of the different size bulbs.
· Table Topics were skipped due to time constraints.
· Rhonda introduced Jennifer Ebner as the General Evaluator. Jennifer introduced her team of evaluators:
o Molly Frisbie evaluated Ferdonya’s speech
o Matt Greenbergs evaluated Don’s speech
o Grammarian/ah counter’s report was skipped due to time constraint
o Doug Goodman provided the timer’s report
· The “Best of” awards were presented by Rhonda:
o Best Speaker: Don Wiggins
o Best Evaluator: Molly Frisbie
· Rhonda asked for announcements. The following announcements were made:
o Century Toastmasters Officers Meeting will be held Thursday, August 23rd at Century Park Cafeteria from 11:30-1pm.
o Area 5, 26, and 27 Tall Tales and Table Topics Contests will be held at Solar Turbines on August 25th from 2-6pm. Ferdonya Henderson will be representing Century Toastmasters in one or both contests.
• Meeting was adjourned at 1:02pm.

Meeting Minutes - August 8, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 12:05pm and was attended by 13 members: Jose De La Torre, Ferdonya Henderson, Rhonda Walthall, Matt Greenbergs, Jennifer Ebner, Lee Moran, Rob Cross, Fabio Bottalico, Darcy Konold, Barbara Prevost-Nedd, Jim Tucker, Stephanie Love-Payne, Don Wiggins, and 1 guest: Brian.

· Sergeant at Arms Ferdonya Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced club President Matt Greenbergs.
· Matt called the meeting to order and announced upcoming Area contests. Matt introduced Jennifer Ebner as Toastmaster.
· Jennifer welcomed guest and members and introduced Rhonda Walthall, VP of Membership and Area 5 Governor for an award presentation.
· Rhonda presented a ribbon to President Matt Greenbergs to recognize Century Toastmasters as a Distinguished President’s Club. Rhonda turned the meeting back over to Jennifer.
· Jennifer introduced the word of the week (W.O.W.), theme, and asked for self introductions by stating your name, using the W.O.W. or describing a time in your life you have persevered.
o Theme: Perseverance
o W.O.W.: resplendent – shining brilliantly: characterized by a glowing splendor
· Darcy Konold presented an educational moment called “Do You Want to be a Millionaire.” Darcy spoke about incorporating the tools used in Toastmasters in one’s professional life in addition to personal life to advance a career and for setting goals and expectations.
· Jennifer introduced the scheduled speakers:
o Speaker #1, Jose De La Torre. Jose redid the CC-1 Icebreaker speech called “The Remake.” Jose shared his personal experiences with public speaking development and his goals for this year to become a CPA, spend more time with his family, and become a part-time employee.
o Speaker #2, Barbara Provost-Nedd gave a speech titled “Three of My Favorite Restaurants.” She revisited a question asked for a table topic’s contest and explained in more detail why Island Spice, Fish Market, and Rubios are her three favorite restaurants.
· Stephanie Love-Payne led the meeting as the Table Topics Master. Stephanie described table topics and called on Fabio Bottolico, Ferdonya Henderson, and Darcy Konold to participate. Each contestant was asked to speak about perseverance in their personal lives or careers which incorporated the theme of the week.
· Jennifer introduced Rhonda Walthall as the General Evaluator. Rhonda introduced her team of evaluators and explained the purpose and importance of the evaluations:
o Darcy Konold evaluated Jose’s speech
o Jim Tucker evaluated Barbara’s speech.
o Fabio provided the grammarian/ah counter’s report
o Lee Moran provided the timer’s report.
o Rhonda provided a general evaluation of the meeting and was evaluated for the CL track by Rob Cross.
· The “Best of” awards where presented by Jennifer:
o Best Speaker: Barbara Provost-Nedd
o Best Table Topics: Darcy Konold
o Best Evaluator: Jim Tucker
· Jennifer asked for announcements. The following announcements were made:
o Area 5, 26, and 27 Tall Tales and Table Topics Contests will be held at Solar Turbines from 2-6pm. Ferdonya Henderson will be representing Century Toastmasters in one or both contests.
o Ferdonya Henderson will be presenting an advanced speech at next week’s meeting where she will be holding a mock press conference on a controversial issue. The attendees are asked to participate as journalists and ask her questions on the issue.
• The meeting was turned over to President, Matt and was adjourned at 1:03pm.

Meeting Minutes - August 1, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 12:07pm and was attended by 12 members: Matt Greenbergs, Barbara Prevost-Nedd, Jessie Wang, Elizabeth Lee, Hannah Zhao, Rhonda Walthall, Jose De La Torre, Jennifer Ebner, Ferdonya Henderson, Don Wiggins, Lee Moran, Stephanie Love-Payne, and 2 guests: Sundar and Brian.

· Sergeant at Arms Ferdonya Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced club President Matt Greenbergs.
· Matt called the meeting to order and introduced himself as Toastmaster.
· Matt welcomed guest and members and introduced the word of the week (W.O.W.), theme, and asked for self introductions by stating your name and what fear you have overcome.
o Theme: Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway
o W.O.W.: mettle – Courage and fortitude; spirit
· Matt led new member inductions in place of Barbara Nedd, VP of Membership. Ferdonya escorted new members: Lee Moran, Elizabeth Lee, and Barbara Nedd from the room for existing members to accept new members into the club. Existing members agreed on accepting new members. New members read the Toastmaster’s new member pledge to existing members. Existing members recited pledge to new members.
· Matt asked Jessie Wang, General Evaluator, to review the evaluator roles for the meeting.
· Matt introduced Speaker #1, Ferdonya Henderson. Ferdonya gave her ATM-B speech #5 from the Speaking to Inform advanced manual, titled “Coco Bean, Dark Chocolate, and Medicine.” The purpose of the speech was to present an abstract concept. Ferdonya explained the properties of dark chocolate and why is should be reclassified from candy to medicine.
· Matt introduced Table Topics Master, Hannah Zhao. Hannah called on Rhonda Walthall, Stephanie Love-Payne, and Lee Moran to participate in table topics. Rhonda spoke about the animal cruelty that Michael Vick is accused of. Stephanie was asked to speak on if a woman should be president. Lee was asked to speak on if he would encourage people to buy a SUV.
· Matt introduced Jessie Wang as the General Evaluator. Jessie introduced her team of evaluators:
o Jose De La Torre evaluated Ferdonya’s speech
o Rhonda provided the grammarian/ah counter’s report and was evaluated for CL project by Don Wiggins.
o Jennifer Ebner provided the timer’s report.
o Jessie provided a general evaluation of the meeting.
· Matt asked for guest comments and passed out 1st timer ribbons to Sundar and Brian and then presented the “Best of” awards.
o Best Speaker: Ferdonya Henderson
o Best Table Topics: Lee Moran
o Best Evaluator: skipped due to time constraints
• Matt adjourned meeting at 1:04pm
