Meeting Minutes - July 25, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 12:08pm and was attended by 10 members: Matt Greenbergs, Cece Rowe, Brenda Gettig, Ferdonya Henderson, Doug Goodman, Jennifer Ebner, Jessie Wang, Darcy Konold, Elizabeth Lee, Rhonda Walthall and 1 guest: Deepika Sagi. · Sergeant at Arms Ferdonya Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced club President Matt Greenbergs. · Matt presented Rhonda Walthall with her CC badge and immediate past President pin. Matt read the club mission statement and welcomed Toastmaster Hannah Zhao. · Hannah welcomed guest and explained the meeting’s Tall Tales contest. She introduced the word of the week (W.O.W.) and theme and asked for self introductions. o Theme: Tall Tales o W.O.W.: Prevaricate – to stray from or evade the truth; equivocate. · There was no educational moment due to contest. Hannah introduced Contest Chair, Rhonda Walthall. · Rhonda introduced the contest and had the contestants randomly pick the speaking order. Each contestant has 3-5 minutes to speak. Minimum 2 min. 30 sec. and maximum 5 min. 30 sec. to deliver speech to not be disqualified. Rhonda introduced Chief Judge, Darcy Konold. · Darcy explained the judging criteria and ballots for the contest. There will be 1 minute between contestants for judging. Darcy turned the meeting back over to Hannah. · Hannah started the contest and welcomed contestants to the lectern: o Contestant #1, Ferdonya Henderson, “What Happened to the Pumpkin? You Decide.” o Contestant #2, Matt Greenbergs, “Cheaper by the Dozen” o Contestant #3, Brenda Gettig, “A Special Spider” • Contest ended, judges scored contestants and ranked the first, second, and third place contestants. Ballots submitted to Chief Judge, Darcy and ballot counter, Cece Rowe. • Hannah interviewed contestants on speeches and turned meeting over to Chief Judge, Darcy. • Darcy announced Tall Tales contest winners. Winner to attend the Area Tall Tales contest on August 25th, 2007: o Runner-up: Ferdonya Henderson o Winner: Brenda Gettig • Closing statements by Hannah and asked for guest input. Hannah turned meeting over to President, Matt. • Matt announced new member inductions scheduled for next meeting, August 1st and adjourned meeting at 1:02pm. July 18, 2007The meeting was called to order at 12:05 p.m. and was attended by 8 members and five guests: Hannah Zhao, Doug Goodman, Rhonda Walthall, Jessie Wang, Brenda Gettig, Matt Greenbergs, Darcy Konold, and Barbara Nedd; new member Cece´ Rowe; first time guests Miyuki, Chris, and Josh, and previous guest Edwin. · Jessie Wang led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced club president Matt Greenberg. · Matt Greenberg opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. He introduced Toastmaster Jessie Wang. · Jessie introduced the theme, Real Magic. The attendees participated in a round of introductions describing a magical thing they have experienced and or a correct usage of the word of the week, “legerdemain.” · Jessie Wang introduced Barbara Nedd for the Educational Moment. Barbara spoke about how to utilizing quotations to make your speeches more distinguished. · Toastmaster Jessie introduced the first scheduled speaker, Hannah Zhao. Hannah presented her ACS-3 speech, entitled “Let’s get personal – my 4 year old daughter”. Hannah discussed 3 personal stories regarding her 4 year old daughter (Helen), and the joys of being a parent to Helen. · Jessie also introduced the second scheduled Darcy Konold. Darcy presented her ACG-6 speecn, entitled “Toastmaster Tips.” Darcy discussed the difference between a podium, and a lectern and the correct way to have speakers approach and exit the lectern or podium. · Due to time constraints table topics was deleted from the meeting. • Jessie Wang introduced the General Evaluator, Doug Goodman. Doug introduced his team of evaluators: o Rhonda evaluated Hannah. o Matt evaluated Darcy. o Cece´ provided her first grammarian/ah counter’s report. o Brenda provided the timer’s report. o Doug Goodman then provided a general evaluation of the meeting. • Toastmaster Jessie presented the “Best of” awards. o Best speaker went to Darcy o There was a tie between Doug and Rhonda for Best evaluator, Rhonda took the ribbon, and Doug the trophy. o First-timer ribbons were presented to Edwin, Miyuki, Chris, and Josh. • Toastmaster Jessie asked for announcements. The following announcements were made: o Rhonda announced the Tall Tales Contest to be held on 7/25/07, and requested additional participants for this contest. o The Area Contest will be held on August 25. o The remaining new officer training dates are: July 28, Miramar College and August 25, Oceanside. The meeting was called to order at 12:10pm and was attended by 13 members: Matt Greenbergs, Jose De la Torre, Darcy Konold, Elizabeth Lee, Jennifer Ebner, Don Wiggins, Rob Cross, Jessie Wang, Hannah Zhao, Fabio Bottalico, Lee Moran, Barbara Prevost-Nedd and Doug Goodman and two guests: David and Robin Hood. · 12:10pm, President Matt Greenbergs led the Pledge of Allegiance, issued officer pins to VP of Membership Barbara Prevost-Nedd and Secretary Jennifer Ebner, issued CTM badge to Jose De la Torre, and introduced Toastmaster/Treasurer Jose De la Torre. · 12:13pm, Jose welcomed guests and encouraged participation in the table topics contest and filled the open meeting roles. He introduced the word of the week (W.O.W.) and theme and asked for self introductions. o Theme: Spontaneous Combustion o W.O.W.: Catalyst – a person or thing acting as the stimulus in bringing about or hastening a result. · There was no educational moment due to contest. Jose introduced contest Chief Judge, Darcy Konold. · 12:25pm, Darcy explained the rules and judging of the contest. The contestant speaking order and table topic question were determined. Each contestant has 2 minutes to speak. Minimum 45 seconds and maximum 2 min. 15 sec. to respond to question to not be disqualified. 1 min. between contestants for judging. Doug Goodman served at contest Sergeant-at-arms. Darcy turned the meeting back over to Jose. ·12:32pm, Jose started the contest. Table topics question: “Name three of your favorite restaurants in San Diego and tell us why they are you favorite.” o Contestant #1, Fabio Bottalico: La China (5910 Santo Road, Tierrasanta), Mexican restaurant, Bronx Pizza (111 Washington St, Hillcrest) o Contestant #2, Jennifer Ebner: Ruth Chris Steakhouse, Bucca di Beppo, Thai restaurant o Contestant #3, Barbara Prevost-Nedd: Island Spice Jamaican restaurant (2820 Market St, San Diego), Fish Market, Rubios o Contestant #4, Lee Moran: La Salsa, Old Town Mexican Café, and Ostera (904 5th Ave, Gaslamp) o Contestant #5, Matt Greenbergs: Taco Bell, Buca di Beppo, Ichiban sushi • 12:50pm, contest ended, judges scored contests based on speech development, effectiveness, physical, voice, and language, and then ranked the first, second, and third place contestants. Ballot submitted to Chief Judge, Darcy. •12:55pm, Jesse Wang provided the timer’s report. •12:59pm, Table Topics Contest winners announced. Winner to attend the area table topics contest on August 25th, 2007: o Runner-up: Matt Greenbergs o Winner: Jennifer Ebner • Guests were asked to provide feedback on the meeting. Robin Hood commented that it was a good experience and is looking forward to learning more about Toastmasters. David seconded Bronx Pizza as being one of his favorite San Diego restaurants. • 1:03pm, Matt read club mission statement and adjourned the meeting.
