Matt asked for self-introductions of those present, asking us to use a three word missive, such as “I am here”. Matt described the role of the Toastmaster.
· Jim Tucker presented an Educational Moment. Jim’s topic was PREP – Point, Reason, Example, Point. Jim described how we could use PREP to respond to a Table Topics question.
· Matt encouraged everyone to clap until the speaker sits down. Next, Matt introduced Darcy, who lead the Table Topics session.
· Darcy spoke of the “tricks of the trade” on how to survive Table Topics. Some of the tricks included 1) greeting the Table Topics Master and members, 2) thanking the Table Topics Master for such a thought provoking question, and 3) asking to have the question repeated.
· Darcy also spoke about how to prepare in advance for Table Topics by being knowledgeable about current events.
· Darcy then gave 11 strategies for answering a Table Topics question (taken from “Lie, Cheat, and Steal” by Sheila Spencer, Toastmasters International, July 2003):
1. Share your views, knowledge, or first thoughts
2. Entertain rather than inform
3. Organize your response – Opening, Body, Closing
4. Lie – use your imagination
5. Back into the question – provide reasons not to do the opposite until you get around to answering the question
6. Cheat – side slip the question or answer someone else’s question
7. Explore rather than answer the question
8. Pretend you misunderstood the question
9. Indulge your imagination – pose a question
10. Steal – use the ideas of others, quote
11. Commit to a single response – don’t change your answer midway through your response
· Darcy lead a round of Table Topics questions:
1. “What are your views regarding the Sunroad Building near Montgomery Field?” – Jennifer Ebner
2. “The city is looking to ban driving of large trucks near residential areas and schools. Do you agree with this ban?” – Doug Goodman
3. “Should cell phone use be banned on all flights?” – Jose de la Torre
