He is striving to achieve balance in his life by infusing something he loves in life into his work. When he was 15, during Career Day, he decided he 1) wanted to be a professional golfer, 2) be a professional musician, and 3) be a professional chef. While in college, he majored in Voice. He has found that golf is a good tool for Sales and he is striving to add golf into his business dealings. As a kid, he was a caddy. He golfed with his Dad every Sunday, which enabled him to develop a close relationship with his father. CENTURY TOASTMASTERS MEETINGCLUB #9273Wednesday, November 9, 2005MINUTES Century Toastmasters had a great meeting with 14 members and guests in attendance! ATTENDEES:Darcy Konold, Joe Stewart, Paul Pitt, Matt Greenbergs, Arnold Ahyuen, Jimmie Webb, Don Wiggins, Frida Vissuet, Byron Shovlain, Rhonda Walthall, Alan Landers, and first-time guests – Deanna Barker, and Dwight and Cynthia.12:05 VP of Education, Darcy Konold, came to the lectern, welcomed everyone, and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Darcy did an excellent job in getting the meeting started and filling the role of the Toastmaster. 12:07 Darcy introduced the theme: Clue (the game) and the WOW: Conservatory. A round of self-introductions followed, in which everyone used the WOW. Self-introductions took 7 minutes. 12:14 Darcy presented the Educational Moment on “The Role of VP of Membership”. Darcy provided a handout that described the primary functions of the VP of membership, including attending training, promoting membership goals and campaigns, and following up with guests. Darcy spoke for 3:10 minutes. 12:18 Darcy introduced the first speaker, Paul Pitt. The title of Paul’s CTM-1 speech was “His Adventures”. Paul began his speech by singing a cappella “Owed My Soul to the Company Store.” The group joined Paul by snapping their fingers. Paul described growing up in the coal-mining town of Hazleton, PA. When he was a young boy, his family left Hazleton and moved to Skokie, IL. Paul joked about not being his father’s favorite son, even though he was his father’s only son. Paul left home at 18 and joined the Navy. He went to “Sonar School” in the Navy and then attended Loyola University on the GI Bill. He earned his pilot’s license and then “fought the Vietnam War with a coffee cup”. Paul considers his biggest challenge in life was raising his daughter, although it did come with benefits – 5 or 6 cheerleaders in the car at any given time. “Papa Smurf”, as he was called by his daughter, was proud to see her graduate from college and even prouder when she gave him a granddaughter. Paul recently traveled to Greece with the philosophy that “You can get killed anywhere, but living is the issue”. He also spent 27 days at sea crossing the Atlantic in a 50-foot sailboat. Paul passed around a series of pictures that spanned his life and adventures. Paul spoke for 7:10 minutes. 12:26 Darcy introduced the 2nd Speaker, Frida Vissuet. The title of Frida’s CTM-3 speech was “Travel – Just Do It”. Frida described her love of traveling without making extensive plans. She works as a travel agent at “Just Do It” and enjoys all the benefits that come with being a travel agent, such as great discounts at hotels and free upgrades to suites and to first class. While at a wedding in Maryland, she decided to take a trip to Tibet with her mother, sister, and cousin. She had read a book about Tibet and became inspired to see the country. At first, she was concerned about her 78-year-old mother and how she would handle the high altitude of Tibet. Because her mother practiced Yoga and was very healthy, she handled the altitude better than the “young people”. Frida encouraged everyone to just travel and don’t worry about making too many plans. Frida spoke for 7:30 minutes. 12:24 Darcy returned to the lectern and reminded everyone to vote for the best speaker. Darcy then invited President, Joe Stewart, to assist her with the nominations of officers for the term Jan 1 – Jun 30, 2006. The following nominations were made: President: Joe Stewart, Darcy Konold VP of Education: Rhonda Walthall VP of Membership: Joe Stewart, Arnold Ahyuen VP of Public Relations: Matt Greenbergs Secretary: Darcy Konold Treasurer: Hannah Zhao Sergeant-At-Arms: Alfred Balagtas, Jimmie Webb 12:32 Darcy returned to the lectern and invited the General Evaluator, Arnold Ahyuen, to lead the Evaluation portion of the meeting. Secretary, Rhonda Walthall, gave the Grammarian/Ah counter’s report and then concluded with “Professor Plum did it in the Library with the Rope.” Alan Landers did an excellent job evaluating Paul’s speech and stated that he loved the humor and all the pictures. Joe Stewart evaluated Frida’s speech and concluded with “Colonel Mustard did it in the Conservatory with a Carnivorous Plant.” 1:42 Darcy asked everyone to vote for the Best Evaluator. She then announced that Paul had won the Best Speaker award and concluded with “Mrs. White did it in the Kitchen with the Knife.” 1:45 Joe Stewart returned to the lectern and announced that he had won the Best Evaluator award. ATTENDEES:Darcy Konold, Hannah Zhao, Dick Larkin, Paul Pitt, Matt Greenbergs, Arnold Ahyuen, Jimmie Webb, Jim Tucker, Don Wiggins, Tony Gutierrez, Frida Vissuet, Byron Shovlain, Rhonda Walthall, and guests – Alan Landers, Greg Prescott, Amir, and Penny McGuire.12:05 Sergeant-At-Arms and Treasurer, Hannah Zhao, welcomed everyone and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. 12:06 VP of Education, Darcy Konold, came to the lectern, welcomed everyone, and introduced Dick Larkin as the Toastmaster. 12:07 Dick introduced the theme: Government of the People and the WOW: Constituent. Dick quoted a Harvard study that found that a direct correlation existed between vocabulary and how much money you make. Dick then asked everyone to introduce themselves and complete the sentence “As a constituent, I …” Self-introductions took 9 minutes. 12:20 Dick introduced the VP of Public Relations, Matt Greenbergs, who presented the Educational Moment on “The Role of VP of Public Relations”. Matt stated that he was very honored to be the VP of Public Relations of the best club in the area. He described the functions that the VP of Public Relations performs in reaching out to current members, new members, and the community. He distributed a sheet with the club’s website information. Matt spoke for 3:40 minutes. 12:24 Dick introduced the first speaker, Secretary Rhonda Walthall. The title of Rhonda’s CTM-3 speech was “11 Minutes Warning”. Rhonda described the events that lead up to the April 3, 1974 tornado outbreak in which 148 tornadoes touched down in 13 states over 16 hours. She provided statistics regarding the six F5 tornadoes that were produced in the storm and showed the Fujita-Pearson tornado classification scale. She described how in 1974 meteorologists were not able to issue warnings until a visual confirmation was given but by 1999, thanks to a $4.5B weather system modernization, the average lead-time for a tornado warning was 11 minutes. Rhonda urged everyone to support President Bush’s $55M forecasting equipment spending package. Rhonda spoke for 7:20 minutes. 12:33 Dick introduced the 2nd Speaker, Jimmie Webb. Jimmie is the proud father of 4 great kids (2 boys, 2 girls). The title of Jimmie’s speech was “Sowing and Reaping”. Jimmie did an excellent job in creating an analogy between a gardener who sows seeds and reaps the benefits of his garden and how we live our lives. Jimmie emphasized that we are the sum of the things we have sown, in particular, our health, our finances, and our families. Jimmie explained that when you sow, you automatically reap; you must sow first before you reap; when you sow, you reap in kind. He held up a cherry tomato, which has about 25 seeds in it. In a few years time, the cherry tomato can become six billion cherry tomatoes. Jimmie concluded by saying that we are consumers and not “sowers” and he ate the cherry tomato. Jimmie spoke for 7:20 minutes. 12:42 Dick came back to the lectern and reminded everyone to vote for the best speaker. He then invited the General Evaluator, VP of Education Darcy Konold, to lead the Evaluation portion of the meeting. Darcy began by presenting Tony Gutierrez with his CTM-10 Badge.
