Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 9-21-2005 Theme: All Over The World WOW: Peregrination –noun; a traveling about; journey. Her peregrinations took her from Atlanta to Latin America. The September 21, 2005 meeting was called to order at 12:10pm by the Molly Frisbie. President Joe Stewart welcomed the attendees and guests. Joe discussed the increase in Membership Dues to $35. The semi-annual dues are due October 1. Please either pay one of the club officers or mail a check to Darcy Konold at: 7565 Salizar Street, San Diego, CA 92111. Please make your check payable to Century Toastmasters. Toastmaster, Molly Frisbie, was introduced to the podium. Molly discussed peregrinations and asked the attendees to introduce themselves and to discuss their favorite spiritual peregrination. Molly spoke for 3 minutes and self-introductions took 8:30 minutes. Stephen Jaworski, presented an Educational Moment regarding the podium. Stephen pointed out that a podium is actually a platform you stand on when you speak. What we normally call the podium at our weekly meetings is actually a lectern. Stephen emphasized that if you use the lectern, you should position it in the room so that the light is on your face and that you are the point of focus in the room. The lectern should also be positioned so that everyone in the room is included in your speech – don’t stand behind people and don’t have people sitting behind you when you speak. Stephen spoke for 2:53 minutes. Immediate Past President, Dick Larkin presented his ATMS-4 speech in which he portrayed the Mayor of San Diego who was presenting a negative message to a group that would likely become angry and argumentative. Mayor Dick introduced a $3 per gallon tax increase to fund a major mass transportation bill. Dick presented his perspective in a clear and logical approach and included visual aids to demonstrate where the additional gas revenue would be spent. Dick spoke for 6:20 minutes. The “angry crowd” fired questions at Dick for an additional 4:40 minutes. Alfred Balagtas presented his CTM-1 speech – the Icebreaker. The title of Alfred’s speech was “What Do You Want To Do When You Grow Up?” As a senior in High School, Alfred had to answer that question in 4 lines or less for his senior yearbook. He compared that experience with having to give his Icebreaker speech in 4 minutes. Alfred introduced himself by listing all the places he has lived and what his hobbies were. He described his occupations and that he is currently happy with being a stay-at-home dad to daughters Madison and Camille. Drawing from a recent SPAM email, he answered 10 out of the 72 SPAM questions about himself. Alfred spoke for 4:20 minutes. An Induction and Awards Ceremony was held. New members, Norma Toothman, Alfred Balagtas, and Jose De la Torre, were escorted out of the room by Stephen Jaworski. The vote was unanimous by the members in attendance to accept all three into the Century Toastmasters Club. The new members were escorted back into the room where they recited their pledge. In addition, Molly Frisbie was presented with her CTM badge. Congratulations to Molly, Norma, Alfred, and Jose. The ceremony took 5 minutes. VP of Education, Darcy Konold, served as General Evaluator. Joe Stewart evaluated Dick’s speech. Secretary, Rhonda Walthall, evaluated Alfred’s speech. VP of Public Relations, Matt Greenbergs, was the Timer. Jose De la Torre was the Grammarian/Ah Counter. Evaluations took 3:50 minutes. Alfred Balagtas was awarded Best Speaker. Darcy Konold was awarded Best Evaluator. Announcements: The Central Division Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests will be held on October 8 at Solar Turbines. Matt Greenbergs will represent Area 5 in the Humorous Speech Contest and Stephen Jaworski will represent Area 5 in the Table Topic Contest. Look for further information regarding the time and cost of the contest. The District Contests will be held on Saturday, October 29 during the Fall Conference. Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 9-14-2005 Theme: Lessons Learned WOW: Vicissitude – any of the changes in conditions during a person’s life. The Ups and Downs of life. The vicissitudes of life brought Mozart both fame and poverty The September 14, 2005 meeting was called to order at 12:10pm by the Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhoa. Even with only 11 members in attendance, the September 14 Century Toastmasters meeting was a great success! Toastmaster, Jim Tucker, was introduced to the podium and spoke about lessons he learned as a child when his mother sent him out to pick out a switch. Jim asked the attendees to stand as a group and individually introduce themselves and state their favorite fruit. After everyone was introduced, Jim asked the group to repeat each other’s favorite fruit. This unconventional round of self-introductions emphasized the importance of listening. Self-introductions took 2:55 minutes. Secretary, Rhonda Walthall, presented an Educational Moment regarding the role of the Speaker. Rhonda emphasized that the role of the Speaker is to plan prepare, practice, and follow through. Planning involves signing up to speak on the Sign-up sheet distributed each week or contact the VP of Education, Darcy Konold. Preparation involves reading the Toastmaster International book and preparing your speech to follow and meet the guidelines in the manual. Practice involves practicing until you are comfortable you’re your speech and the transitions. Follow Through involves showing up at the meeting early, bringing your book, notes, and visual aids, greeting the Toastmaster with a hand shake, acknowledging the fellow Toastmasters and guests, presenting your speech, and then listening to the Evaluator. Rhonda spoke for 3:06 minutes. Darcy Konold presented her ATMS-8 speech – the Entertaining Speaker. The objective of Darcy’s speech was to draw on dramatic material from non-personal experiences. The title of Darcy’s speech was “Stop or Grow”. Darcy started by describing the three types of roadblocks we face in life: 1) small stumbling blocks from which we quickly recover, 2) mid-size blocks that we recover from with some effort, and 3) big, over-whelming boulders that may change the direction of our life. Darcy told the stories of Fred Luster and Kathleen Vestal Logan, who overcame boulders and grew. (Both stories were featured in the August 2005 Toastmasters magazine.) Darcy related how both Fred and Kathleen made the decision to grow rather than to stop. Darcy spoke for 7:47 minutes. Hannah Zhao was the Table Topics Master. The participants were: Joe Stewart, Arnold Ahyuen, Darcy Konold, and Rhonda Walthall. Hannah quoted four different “old wives tales” and asked each of the participants whether they agreed or disagreed with the tales. Doug Goodman, served as General Evaluator. Don Wiggins evaluated Darcy’s speech. Norma Toothman was the Timer. Arnold Ahyuen was the Grammarian/Ah Counter. Evaluations took 3:01 minutes. Darcy Konold was awarded the Best Speaker. Doug Goodman and Don Wiggins shared the award for the Best Evaluator. Arnold Ahyuen was awarded the Best Table Topics. Announcements: The Induction & Awards Ceremony will be held on September 21. Membership Dues are due October 1. The semi-annual dues are increasing to $35. Please pay Tony. The Area 5 Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests were held on September 10. Matt Greenbergs won the Humorous Speech Contest and Stephen Jaworski won the Table Topic Contest. Congratulations to both! The District Contests will be held on Saturday, October 8 at Solar Turbines on Ruffin Road. Please join us in cheering on Stephen and Matt. Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 9-7-2005 Theme: Best Laid Plans WOW: Aspiration– a strong wish, hope, or ambition The September 7, 2005 meeting was called to order at 12:05pm by the VP of Education, Darcy Konold. With 14 members and 4 first-time guests in attendance, the September 7 Century Toastmasters meeting was a great success! Toastmaster, Byron Shovlain, was introduced to the podium and briefly spoke about the theme and the WOW. A round of introductions followed, which took 5:55 minutes. Treasurer, Tony Gutierrez, presented an Educational Moment regarding the role of the Evaluator. Tony announced that an Evaluator’s workshop is planned for September and the date will be announced at a later time. Tony emphasized that as an Evaluator, we need to help the speaker to know how far he or she has progressed and what speaking skills could still be improved. Tony recommended that Evaluators arrive early and talk to the speakers to learn what their speech will be about and what areas the speaker is looking to improve. During the speech, the Evaluator should take notes and then provide an evaluation that begins and ends on a positive note. Tony also recommended that the Evaluators talk to the speakers afterwards to make certain that they feel good about their accomplishment. Tony spoke for 4:17 minutes. Norma Toothman presented her CTM-1 speech. The title of Norma’s speech was “My Three Passions”. Norma did an excellent job with her Icebreaker speech in introducing her personal passions in life: 1) her 3 children, 2) people, and 3) politics. Norma spoke about her daughters Brooke (an aspiring Toastmaster and Politician), Giselle (a high-achieving GATE student), and Arthur (Navy bound in June). Norma spoke of her passion for seeing people’s reactions to life and how helping people helps her to become a more humble and better person. Norma also expressed how she feels the need to be a part of something greater, which is why she is involved in politics and various committees. Norma spoke for 6:40 minutes. Jude Awililika, presented his CTM-5 speech. The title of Jude’s speech was “Lessons Learned in Project Management”. Jude related his lessons learned when volunteered to manage a project that turned out to be more than he had been lead to believe. Jude’s top lessons learned were: 1) make sure the accounts are ready and that the money is really there, 2) you may not always have enough time to explain what you need, 3) don’t call people if you need an immediate response – just show up at their door, 4) your equipment may not be ready when you need it even if you were promised that it would be, and 5) do not believe anything you are told without checking it over and over again. Jude spoke for 8:21minutes. Past President, Dick Larkin, presented his ATMS-3 speech titled “Prioritize Your Life in 30 Seconds”. Dick gave us wake-up call speech regarding our priorities. Dick walked around the room carrying a box, asking the members what they would put in their box if they only had 30 seconds to decide. Dick used humor to emphasize the significance between items, such as a phone book and a photograph of a child, or an apple and a cell phone. Dick asked what we would give to have just 30 more seconds with a loved one. Dick left the listeners with the thought that we should all consider what 10 items we would put in our box if we had to carry the box for 3 days, without food and water. Dick spoke for 7:41 minutes. Doug Goodman, served as General Evaluator. Tony Gutierrez evaluated Norma’s speech. Jim Tucker evaluated Jude’s speech. Matt Greenbergs evaluated Dick’s speech. Jose De la Torre was the Timer. Evaluations took 8:30 minutes. Norma Toothman was awarded the Best Speaker. Tony Gutierrez was awarded the Best Evaluator. Jude Awililika was awarded his Half CTM ribbon. Stephen Jaworski was awarded his CTM badge. The Induction & Awards Ceremony was not held due to time constraints. Announcements: Membership Dues are due October 1. Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 8-31-05 Theme: Sunrise-Sunset WOW: Radiant - shining brightly; beaming; coming from a source of rays The Century Toastmasters meeting was called to order by Matt Greenbergs. Toastmaster for the day Darcy Konold introduced the theme and WOW and began self-introductions. She asked members and guests whether we preferred sunrises or sunsets. The majority answered sunrises. Cher Vargas did an Educational Moment about the role of the Grammarian and "Ah" Counter. The Counter's function is keep record of "crutch" words or "fillers" and both proper and improper usage of grammar in a meeting. Being the Counter has many benefits, some of which include the opportunity to hone your listening skills and the opportunity to serve other members by providing a valuable service to the club. The first speaker of the day, Tony Gutierrez, gave his ATM-B-1 speech titled "The Financial Needs Analysis." He asked us if we had a financial planner in our life, and how we protect our assets. Tony works for Primerica, an international corporation, which is part of Citigroup. He explained the aspects of a personal financial analysis and the many benefits of receiving financial guidance in the areas of debt management, retirement and life insurance. The second speaker of the day, Allison Converse, gave her CTM 7 speech. She spoke of the difficulty of getting organized. Allison recently read a book (one of her favorite hobbies) to help her get organized. The author recommended to "organize yourself from the inside out." Have a plan, and figure out why you're disorganized and why you want to be more organized. Allison has used some of this knowledge to motivate herself to get organized, luckily just in time for her mother to come and visit. Molly Frisbie led Table Topics, and speakers included Don Wiggins, guest Calvin, and Tania Fragomeno. Matt served as General Evaluator, Stephen Jaworski evaluated the first speech, Doug Goodman evaluated the second speech, Norma Toothman served as the grammarian/ah counter, and guest Adrianna Hernandez was timer. Tony won Best Speaker and Doug won Best Evaluator. Don won Best Table Topics. We had a full meeting with 15 people, including three active guests, Calvin, Adrianna, and Omar. The area Humorous Speech Contest is Saturday, September 10, at Solar Turbines, from 3-5 p.m. Matt and Stephen will be representing Century Toastmasters.
