Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 7-27-05 Theme: The Civil War WOW: Haberdashery – a store that sells men’s and women’s notions such as suspenders, buttons, and thread The July 27 2005 meeting was called to order at 12:09pm by the Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao. Century Toastmasters had a fantastic meeting with 14 people in attendance. President, Joe Stewart, was called to the podium and read the Century Toastmasters Mission Statement. Toastmaster and VP of Education, Darcy Konold, was introduced to the podium. Darcy discussed the issues our nation faced prior to the Civil War and described the actions that drove the start of the war. Darcy invited the attendees to introduce themselves and to try to use the WOW, haberdashery. Self-introductions took 6:00 minutes. President, Joe Stewart, presented an Educational Moment regarding the many hats a member wears when fulfilling one of the meeting functions. Over the next several weeks, the Educational Moment will focus each week on one of the meeting functions, such as the Toastmaster or Evaluator. Joe thrilled the crowd with his wide array of hats, including a loud speaker, a table, a timer, a toaster, and a spyglass. Joe spoke for 3:23 minutes. Secretary, Rhonda Walthall, presented her CTM2 speech, focusing on organization. The title of Rhonda’s speech was “The Need For Speed”. Rhonda shared her first experience in an autocross race in which she finished last place. Rhonda’s speech focused on the enjoyment of the sport of autocross and what a person needs to do to prepare for an autocross. Rhonda spoke for 7:39 minutes. VP of Membership, Cher Vargas, presented her CTM4 speech, focusing on how to say it. The title of Cher’s speech was “Sunny San Diego”. Cher reminded us of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful, sunny city. She provided example of things to do and places to go to truly enjoy what San Diego has to offer. Cher spoke for 3:30 minutes. Past President, Dick Larkin, presented his ATMS2 speech, focusing on persuasion. Fellow member Stephen Jaworski assisted Dick. Stephen played the role of an interviewer and Dick played the role of the interviewee. Dick presented a new option for San Diego residents to save money when requesting directory assistance by dialing 1-800-SAN-DIEGO. Dick spoke for 3:13 minutes. Christina Rivas presented Table Topics. Christina called on three participants, Norma Toothman, Jose De la Torre, and Eric Dzamefe to discuss various Civil War issues, such as what is the lingering impact of the Civil War, what is the current role of the American Red Cross, and what weapons are used today. Stephen Jaworski served as General Evaluator. VP of Public Relations, Matt Greenbergs, evaluated Rhonda’s speech. Byron Shovlain evaluated Cher’s speech. Hannah Zhao evaluated Dick’s speech. Jose Mascorro was the Grammarian/Ah Counter, and Jose De la Torre was the Timer. Evaluations took 6:22 minutes. Rhonda Walthall and Dick Larkin tied for Best Speaker. Jose De la Torre won Best Table Topics Speaker. Matt Greenbergs won Best Evaluator. Dick Larkin presented a beautiful President’s Distinguished Award ribbon to Hannah Zhao. Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 7-20-05 Theme: A Giant Leap for Mankind WOW: Moonwalk – to go on foot across the moon’s surface; a gliding disco dance The July 20 2005 meeting was called to order at 12:05pm by the Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao. Century Toastmasters had a fantastic meeting with only 10 people in attendance. Toastmaster Matt Greenbergs was introduced to the podium. Matt discussed his first memory of the Moonwalk disco dance and invited the attendees to introduce themselves and to describe their first memory of the Moonwalk, whether it was the actual moonwalk performed by Neil Armstrong or whether it was the disco dance. Self introductions took 8:00 minutes. VP of Education, Darcy Konold, presented an Educational Moment regarding how much information was available in the Toastmasters magazine. Darcy brought in a stack of Toastmasters magazines dating back to 1990. She invited the members to review the old magazines for articles pertinent to where each of us were in our Toastmasters’ education. Darcy spoke for 2:47 minutes. Jimmie Webb presented his CTM/2 speech, focusing on organization. The title of Jimmie’s speech was “The First Star”. Jimmie shared a memory from when he was 11 years old in which he wished upon the first star of the night. He wished that everyone would go to heaven. Jimmie’s speech focused on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jimmie used good vocal variety and body language to express his passion for the subject. Jimmie spoke for 4:44 minutes. Molly Frisbie presented her CTM/10 speech, focusing on inspiration. The title of Molly’s speech was “Have No Fear”. Molly emphasized the following points: “Hitch your wagon to a star” – humans can achieve whatever they want. “Always do what you are afraid to do” – separate your fears from real obstacles. Molly shared her fears of starting a new job right out of college in a new town away from her family and boyfriend. “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”. “If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning”. “Every man I meet is in some way my superior” – Molly shared that she felt relief in this belief that she did not need to be the best at everything. “Unless you try to do something that you have not already mastered, you will never grow” – do not be afraid of failure. “Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood” – do not feel guilty about being happy about change. “The reward of a thing well done is to have it done” – don’t get bogged down. “Make the most of yourself for that is all there is of you” – don’t be afraid of your own potential. “Be careful what you set your heart on for it will surely be yours” – do not be afraid to accomplish everything you have set out to do in life. Molly spoke for 10:00 minutes. Jude Awiyilika presented Table Topics. Jude asked four participants, Stephen Jaworski, Darcy Konold, Norma Toothman, and Hannah Zhao to expand on their first impression of the moonwalk or to give an example of an insurmountable event that they or someone they knew had overcome. Jude then entertained us with his moonwalking skills. Table Topics took 8:51 minutes. Secretary Rhonda Walthall served as General Evaluator. Hannah Zhao evaluated Jimmie’s speech. Stephen Jaworski evaluated Molly’s speech. Joe Stewart was the Grammarian/Ah Counter, and Norma Toothman was the Timer. Evaluations took 7:55 minutes. Molly Frisbie won Best Speaker. Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 7-13-05 Theme: Earthquake County WOW: Seismicity – the distribution and frequency of earthquakes and other seismic events The July 13, 2005 meeting was called to order by the Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao, at 12:05pm. Century Toastmasters had a fantastic meeting with 21 people in attendance, including two guests. Toastmaster and President Joe Stewart was introduced to the podium. Joe discussed his experience with earthquakes while living in San Diego County. Joe then invited the attendees to introduce themselves and to describe the seismicity of the area in which they grew up. Self-introductions took TBD minutes. VP of Membership, Cher Vargas, presented an Educational Moment regarding how to give effective evaluations. Cher emphasized that as an evaluator, we should read the speech objective in the manual, listen carefully, be specific, speak for ourselves (not the group), and conclude on a positive note. Cher urged us all to sign up to be an evaluator. Cher spoke for 2:53 minutes. Hannah Zhao presented her ATMB/3 speech, focusing on demonstration. The topic of Hannah’s speech was “The History of Chinese Script”. Hannah demonstrated examples of Chinese scripts that dated back 6000 years and how some of the scripts had changed to current day. Hannah focused on 4 out of the 6 methods used for writing Chinese script, including: 1) Pictographs, 2) Indicatives, 3) Ideographs, and 4) Phonetic Semantic Compounds. Hannah spoke for 12:56 minutes. Contact Hannah if you are interested in learning more about Chinese script. Dick Larkin presented his ATMS/1 speech, focusing on a positive aspect of Toastmasters. The title of Dick’s speech was “How Happy Are You?” Dick emphasized the following points: Your happiness is directly related to the amount of control you feel and feeling in control comes only through confidence. Confidence comes from over coming fears by setting and achieving goals. Dick recommended that we surround ourselves with people who support and encourage us to grow. He also encouraged us to set and achieve our goals and then set a new goal after we achieve a goal. Dick helped us to be aware of how Toastmasters helps us to become confident by setting and achieving goals. Dick spoke for 8:58 minutes. Stephen Jaworski presented his CTM/9 focusing on Persuading With Power. The title of Stephen’s speech was “Local Economics, the Princess Effect, and the 25 Cent Solution”. Stephen began his speech with examples of how men have valued a woman’s affection over money by buying them expensive gifts or going to extreme measures to gain their affection. Stephen used examples to persuade the listeners to be wise with their spending and not to get caught up in spending more than you can afford. He urged us to not spend money on material things if our finances are not in order. Stephen provided examples of how to save money. Stephen spoke for 8:15 minutes. Molly discussed the various ways we could conserve energy to avoid depleting our natural oil fields and becoming dependent on foreign oil. Molly also discussed the environmental and economical impact of burning fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and hydroelectric power. Molly did an excellent job in persuading the listeners to recognize our contribution in energy conservation. Joe Stewart led Table Topics, sticking with the theme of the week. Arnold Ah Yuen, Allison Converse and Jose Mascorro had the pleasure of answering his questions regarding fireworks. Table Topics took 2:03 minutes and Arnold won the Best Table Topics award. Byron Shovlain served as General Evaluator, Hannah Zhao evaluated Molly's speech, Rhonda Walthall was the Grammarian/Ah Counter, and Norma Toothman was Timer. All did an excellent job, and Hannah won Best Evaluator.
