Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 6-1-05
Theme: Is it May Gray or June Gloom?
WOW: Upwelling – the transport of deeper water to shallow water
President Dick Larkin quickly called the meeting to order, and
introduced the Toastmaster for the day Joe Stewart. Joe introduced the
theme and WOW, and began self-introductions by asking everyone when
she or he figured out the San Diego June weather. The group carried
the overall opinion that San Diegans have little to complain about
weather-wise!
Matthew Greenbergs gave an Educational Moment about the Distinguished
Club Program. Toastmasters International sets out 10 specific goals
for each Toastmasters chapter regarding speech program completions,
membership and officer training. If a club makes 9 out of 10 of the
goals it gets the Presidents Distinction (which Century Toastmasters
received last year!). Our club is well on its way again of reaching
the high status. Thanks Matt for picking an informative and important
topic.
I (Molly Frisbie) gave my CTM 7 speech on the preparation it takes in
learning how to surf. I talked about clothing, equipment, lessons,
surf spots and etiquette and safety.
Jim Tucker presented his speech titled "Quite Heroes." Jim is
developing his speech for a regional speech competition and is
representing Century Toastmasters. Jim spoke of stories in his
childhood and witnessing quite heroes. He then connected his
experiences in his youth to his actions as a father. Jim explained a
quiet hero as someone who "always builds up the human spirit and never
tears it down." Thank you Jim for a fantastic speech and we wish you
the best of luck.
Dee Williams served as General Evaluator, Dick evaluated the first
speech, Rhonda Walthall timed, and Tony Gutierrez again provided a
thorough and helpful grammarian/ah count. We had a round robin
evaluation for Jim.
We welcomed first timers Norma Toothman and Bruno Velosa, and welcomed
back guests James Jang and Josh Wittman. We hope to see you all again
soon!
The next Century Toastmasters meeting is June 8, noon, at Century Park
building 4, room 4120C.
