Meeting Minutes Oct 26, 2005
CENTURY TOASTMASTERS MEETINGCLUB #9273Wednesday, October 26, 2005MINUTES Century Toastmasters had a great meeting with 18 members and guests in attendance! ATTENDEES:Joe Stewart, Jose de la Torre, Darcy Konold, Hannah Zhao, Stephen Jaworski, Martin Olmeda, Paul Pitt, Matt Greenbergs, Arnold Ahyuen, Dee Williams, Rhonda Walthall, and guests – Alan Landers, Heather, Dakota Hills, Cindy, Kathy, Jennifer Morgan, and Kelly Straffield.12:09 Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao, welcomed everyone and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. 12:10 Joe Stewart came to the lectern, welcomed everyone, and introduced Jose de la Torre as the Toastmaster. This was Jose’s first time as Toastmaster and he did a great job! 12:11 Jose welcomed our 1st time special guests (Heather, Dakota, Cindy, Kathy, Jennifer, and Kelly). Our guests participate in a local home school program whose curriculum includes a Toastmasters program. Jose introduced the theme: Guess Who I Am and the WOW: Incognito. Jose, who grew up in Mexico, talked about Halloween and how Mexico did not celebrate “The Day of the Dead” until about 25 years ago. He started celebrating Halloween when he moved to the US. While he does not enjoy wearing costumes, he enjoys seeing others in costumes and is looking forward to seeing his daughters in their Halloween costumes this year. A round of self-introductions followed in which everyone described a time when they were incognito or wished they had been incognito. 12:24 Jose introduced the Secretary, Rhonda Walthall, who presented the Educational Moment on “The Role of Secretary”. Rhonda described the functions that the Secretary in a Toastmasters club needs to perform during club meetings and outside club meetings and she handed out a description of each of these tasks. She also gave out M&Ms plain (for Minutes and Mailings) and M&Ms with Nuts (because you gotta be nuts to be the Secretary!) 12:28 Jose introduced the first speaker Dee Williams. The title of Dee’s CTM-7 speech was “Cold or Allergy”. Dee gave an excellent speech on the differences between colds and allergies. She listed a variety of common allergens, such as pollen, mold, dust, insects, venom, and various animals. Dee is an allergy sufferer herself and has particular trouble with chemical irritants, including perfume. Dee described the similarities and differences between cold and allergy symptoms. She stated that over 35,000 people in the US suffer annually from Upper Respiratory symptoms. She also stated that about 11M people in the US suffer from asthma and 40 –50M suffer from Hay Fever, which is an allergy to pollen. Dee provided some remedies for allergy sufferers. 12:36 Jose introduced the 2nd Speaker, Treasurer and Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao. The title of Hannah’s speech was “Financial Behavior”. Hannah did an excellent job in highlighting how most people’s financial behavior is emotion driven. She enlisted Stephen Jaworski and VP of Education, Darcy Konold, to participate in a financial game. When Stephen was given $1000 and offered the chance to receive an additional $500 or take a 50/50 chance that he would win an additional $1000 or $0, Stephen chose to take the 50/50 chance. Hannah pointed out that 90% of people would make the same choice. When Darcy was given $2000 and offered the chance to lose $500 or take a 50/50 chance that she would lose an additional $1000 or $0, Darcy chose to lose the $500 and not take the 50/50 chance. Hannah pointed out that 80% of people would have taken the 50/50 chance. Hannah explained that people are emotional about losing money, which is why they would take the chance of losing more ($1000) since there was a 50% chance that they would not lose anything. Hannah explained that people hate to lose money more than they like to gain money and that they would chose more risk in order to “avoid” more loss. She pointed out that people are also more comfortable about selling stock when they have a gain rather than selling when they have a loss. Hannah closed by saying that we should look at our entire financial picture as a whole rather than make a decision based on emotions. 12:48 Jose came back to the lectern and reminded everyone to vote for the best speaker. He then invited the General Evaluator, Alan Landers, to lead the Evaluation portion of the meeting. Alan introduced VP of Public Relations, Matt Greenbergs, to evaluate Dee’s speech and Joe Stewart to evaluate Hannah’s speech. Both did an excellent job. Arnold Ahyuen gave the Timer’s report. Paul Pitt was the Grammarian/Ah Counter, but did not get called upon to give his report. Sorry Paul! 1:00 Jose asked everyone to vote for the Best Evaluator. He then announced that Hannah had won the Best Speaker award and Joe received the Best Evaluator award. Joe announced the Century Toastmasters had received a Founder’s Award for starting a new club. Thank you Jim Tucker and Martin Olmeda for starting the club in Rancho Bernardo for Sony employees! The ribbon will be displayed with the banner at each meeting. The Fall District Conference is this coming weekend. Nomination will be held on November 2 and Elections will be held on November 9. 1:05 The meeting was adjourned. ATTENDEES:Joe Stewart, Jim Tucker, Jose de la Torre, Darcy Konold, Hannah Zhao, Stephen Jaworski, Doug Goodman (and Dexter), Martin Olmeda, Alfred Balagtas, Byron Shovlain, Molly Frisbie, Paul Pitt, Frida Vissuet, Dick Larkin, Matt Greenbergs, Norma Toothman, and guests - Tina Miller, John Davis, and Camille Balagtas12:05 Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao, welcomed everyone and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. 12:06 Joe Stewart came to the lectern, welcomed everyone, and introduced Stephen Jaworski as the Toastmaster. 12:07 Stephen welcomed the guests (Tina Miller, John Davis, and Camille Balagtas). Stephen introduced the theme: Humor Me and the WOW: Shenanigans. He then verified that all the roles were filled and then invited the attendees to introduce themselves, use the WOW, tell where they would be going when they left the meeting today, and whether anyone would be involved in any shenanigans. Everyone used the WOW! 12:20 Stephen introduced President, Joe Stewart, who presented the Educational Moment on “The Role of Treasurer”. Joe did a great job of explaining what the Treasurer in a Toastmasters club needs to do. Joe handed out an itemized list of all the duties and a graph that showed where all of our TM dues are used. Joe ended his presentation with a reminder that there were still a few members that have not yet turned in their membership renewal dues by commenting “that is what the Treasurer does.” 12:28 Stephen introduced the first speaker Alfred Balagtas. ” Alfred is a stay-at-home dad, who loves 4 X 4s, his wife, and his two daughters. Alfred presented his #2 project from the C&L Manual. The title of Alfred’s speech was “Kids Will Be Kids”. Alfred gave an excellent speech on his knowledge and experience raising his daughters. When he first became a stay-at-home dad, he thought he had it under control. However, kids will be kids and even the best little angel has her exorcist moments! He talked about different styles of discipline because his father was very strict. One day Alfred overheard his daughters playing with their stuffed animals saying “Didn’t I tell you not to do that?” “How many times do I have to say it?” He was concerned about their conversation and he discussed it with his wife. Then he saw advertisement for a seminar on parenting that addressed this very concern so he and his wife signed up to attend. At the seminar, he learned the 3 types pf parents: #1 Drill Instructor, #2 Helicopter - this parent hovers over the child to prevent any bad from happening, and #3, the best kind -The Consultant. This type of parent allows growth by allowing child to learn from mistakes, has empathy but is not condescending, doesn’t solve problems for them, gives them choices, and lets them have the opportunity to make good choices. Alfred then shared some examples with us of experiences he has had with his daughters and how he has applied what he has learned and the positive results he has had. He closed by pointing out that good parenting skills bring less guilt and less spanking. “Kids will be kids, they just shouldn’t be treated like it.” 12:43 Stephen introduced the 2nd Speaker, VP of Public relations, Matt Greenbergs. Matt works for SDG&E with several titles behind his name and loves time with his wife and kids. Matt presented his 2nd project from the Successful Club Series. The title of Matt’s speech was “Closing the Sale”. Matt did an excellent job. He provided a handout that concisely listed each point he covered as he explained the 6 Successful Clubs Standards, the 3 possible Outcomes Of Closing The Sale, the 4 Reasons Why People Join Toastmasters, and the 5 Approaches To CLOSE the Deal. Matt emphasized how to “Really Close the Deal” and to do it ASAP! 12:55 Stephen came back to the lectern and reminded everyone to vote for the best speaker. He then invited Hannah to lead the Evaluation portion of the meeting. She introduced Molly Frisbie to evaluate Alfred’s speech and Dick Larkin to evaluate Matt’s speech. Both did an excellent job. Hannah then asked Paul Pitt to give the Grammarian/Ah Counter’s report and Byron Shovlain to give the Timer’s report. Hannah then made a few brief comments. 1:04 Stephen asked everyone to vote for the Best Evaluator. He then announced that Alfred had won the Best Speaker award. Dueto the lack of time, he invited Joe up to the lectern to finish any business while the votes for Best Evaluator were being counted. Joe announced the Fall Conference coming up on October 28th and awarded Molly the Best Evaluator award! Elections will be held on November 2. Since the club Treasurer resigned, a new Treasurer is needed through the remainder of the year. Dick nominated Hannah and Matt 2nd the nomination. Joe called for any other nominations. Dick moved the nominations be closed and Stephen 2nd the motion. The MOTION CARRIED and Hannah will be our Treasurer and the Sergeant-At-Arms until the term ends on Dec 31st. Frida Vissuet offered to help with the Sergeant-At-Arms responsibilities. Second, the club voted on the increase in dues. The motion was made, Dick 2nd the motion. Hannah spoke for 1:18 minutes. 12:12 Hannah presented the Educational Moment: The role of the Sergeant-At-Arms. Hannah emphasized the three main functions of the role: 1) arrive early and set up the room, 2) start the Pledge of Allegiance, and 3) track the inventory for awards and supplies. Hannah spoke for 2:19 minutes. 12:15 Hannah introduced the first prepared speaker, Martin Olmeda. Martin was the District 5 Governor (1998-1999) and just recently founded a new club in Rancho Bernardo. 12:16 The title of Martin’s speech was “Eight to Ten Minutes”. Martin discussed the history of Toastmasters International, which was founded in October 1924 by Ralph Smedley. The first meetings were held in the basement of the YMCA in Santa Ana, CA and were attended by professional businessmen seeking to improve their speaking skills, in particular, their skills at giving toasts at social banquets. The first international club was formed in Westminister, Canada in 1930. In 1972, women were welcomed into Toastmasters International. Today, there are over 193,000 members world-wide in 86 countries. The goal for 2010 is to have over 200,000 members in 200 countries. Martin gave a brief overview of the various speaking levels: CTM (Can’t Talk Much), ATM (Able To Talk Much), and DTM (Don’t Time Me). As a result of the irregularity, pension payments were suspended immediately and indefinitely. Dick calmly described the $2.1B shortfall that resulted from poor investments made in risky real estate deals in New Orleans. Dick also stated that an investigation had been launched since some of the investments appeared to be fraudulent. Dick also expressed with remorse that the pension plan was not guaranteed under the PBGC since malfeasance appeared to be the cause of the shortfall. He talked about the different ways different clubs do things: Some clubs, like ours, allow everyone to join. Some clubs are set up within an organization and allow only members or employees of that establishment to join such as Singles, Military, Men Only, ATM and Above, and SDG&E in the beginning. He also talked about the different times clubs meet:Some meet for breakfast, some for lunch, some for dinner, some meet at 7am and don’t eat, some meet at 7pm and don’t eat. Some hold their meeting for an hour, others meet for 90 minutes, and still others meet for two hours. Those clubs that meet for 90 minutes or more get to participate in a business meeting and experience parliamentary procedure. Jimmie Webb - ”Be more sensitive of other’s feelings.” He had been spending too much time at Century Park and not enough time at home with his family, so he’s been working on it and doing better.Alfred Balagtas - ”A visit from a friend-some come and some travel.” He always enjoys visiting with friends. Sometimes they come to him, other times he travels to visit with them.Dee Williams - ”Expand your views, the possibilities are endless.” She felt she had been focusing too much on her own life and that it was time for her to “move out of the box”. She agreed that she needs to expand her views and discover new things.Martin Olmeda - ”Glory is reached by many different roads.” He agreed this is true and used the examples of Alfred’s love for his family and Dee’s need to step out of her box to illustrate that we each have different desires and things that are important to us. Jose de la Torre - ”Count your blessings today.” “I haven’t yet today” but had been in Minnesota recently where the seasons are changing and he was able to take time to appreciate all the fall colors and the opportunity to see his family. Dee replied, “It was great, just a little short.” Alfred was asked to give the Grammarian/Ah Counter’s report and Jose gave the Timer’s report. 12:53 Stephen evaluated the meeting: We’ve been starting our meetings late a lot lately. Recognized that we’re all busy, but we really need to make the effort to arrive on time. If there’s anything the officer’s can do to facilitate this or anything we can do as members to help set up the room, we should all help to get our meetings started on time.
