Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 8-17-05

Theme: The Great Outdoors
WOW: Nettle – to fret or sting; to irritate or vex; to excite sensations of uneasiness

The August 17 2005 meeting was called to order at 12:08pm by the Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao.

Century Toastmasters had a fantastic meeting with 17 people in attendance, including two guests.

President, Joe Stewart, was called to the podium and read the Century Toastmasters Mission Statement.

Toastmaster Don Wiggins was introduced to the podium. Don spoke for 3:36 minutes about John Muir and the various books written by great outdoor enthusiast.

Vice President of Education, Darcy Konold, presented an Educational Moment regarding the role of the General Evaluator. Darcy emphasized the need to be prepared prior to the start of the meeting to ensure that all of Evaluators are prepared for their individual roles. Darcy spoke for 4:13 minutes.

Stephen Jaworski presented his CTM-10 speech, focusing on inspiration. The title of Stephen’s speech was “Snapshots of My Life”. Stephen shared moments from his youth when he was a basketball star and how he inspired himself to find the fire inside to succeed in athletics. Stephen passed around newspaper clippings and photos of himself from whitewater rafting and hiking. Stephen spoke about his spiritual orientation and the moment he awoke to life. Stephen inspired us all to look for our own fire and to look beyond the barriers and embrace life. Stephen spoke for 12:45 minutes.

VP of Public Relations, Matt Greenbergs, presented his CL-1 speech, focusing on inspiring the club members to “Create the Best Club Climate”. Matt highlighted how each member can set a good example for guests and other members by arriving early, offering to help, volunteering for committees, and being supportive. Matt also emphasized that we should roll out the welcome mat for guests by greeting them, talking to them, and inviting them to join the club. Matt concluded by reminding us to show members that we care by volunteering to be a mentor, being considerate, paying attention to the long-time members, giving excellent evaluations, recognizing achievements, and by fostering camaraderie. Matt spoke for 8:49 minutes.

Jose De la Torre, presented his CTM-3 speech, focusing on getting to the point. The title of Jose’s speech was “The Energy of Sunny San Diego”. Jose spoke about two types of solar energy: solar panels/cells and solar heating/lighting. Jose gave examples of how inexpensive and efficient solar energy is. Jose concluded by talking about the upcoming Solar Energy Week, Sep 25 – Oct 1. Free seminars and workshops will be offered. Jose spoke for 7:49 minutes.


President, Joe Stewart, served as General Evaluator. Molly Frisbie evaluated Stephen’s speech. Secretary, Rhonda Walthall, evaluated Matt’s speech. VP of Education, Darcy Konold, evaluated Jose’s speech. Frida Vissuet was the Grammarian/Ah Counter, and Dick Larkin was the Timer. Evaluations took 5:06 minutes.

Stephen Jaworski was awarded the Best Speaker. Molly Frisbie was awarded the Best Evaluator.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:08pm.
