August 10 Meeting Minutes
Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 8-10-05
Theme: Wit and Wisdom
WOW: Droll – amusing in an odd or wry way.
The August 10, 2005 meeting was called to order at 12:08pm by the Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao.
Century Toastmasters had a great Humorous Speech Contest with 20 people in attendance, including 3 returning guests, and 2 first time attendees.
Stephen Jaworski was the Toastmaster. Stephen dazzled us with his wit and wisdom and a multitude of droll jokes. A brief round of introductions followed with each attendee saying whom their favorite comedian was. The Toastmaster’s welcome and self-introductions took 12 minutes.
President, Joe Stewart, presented an Educational Moment regarding the function of the Table Topics Master. Joe highlighted the purpose of the Table Topics program was to help people “speak on their feet.” Joe emphasized that the Table Topics Master should chose questions that are relevant to the theme and the W.O.W. and that the questions should inspire people to think, not put them on the spot.
Doug Goodman served as Chief Judge for the Humorous Speech Contest. Norma Toothman, was the Ballot Counter and Secretary, Rhonda Walthall, was the Timer. The two contestants were directed to speak for a minimum of 4.5 minutes and a maximum of 7.5 minutes.
Contestant #1: Hannah Zhao was introduced to the podium. Hannah’s speech was titled “When You Have a Two Year Old At Home.” Hannah entertained us with several humorous experiences of having a two-year daughter with a vocabulary of big words and strong negotiation skills. Hannah spoke for 6:57 minutes.
Contestant #2: Matt Greenbergs was introduced to the podium. Matt’s speech was titled “Greatest Kids”. Matt entertained us with humorous stories regarding his 4 children (7, 5, 3, and 1 years old) and their live-in friends “Not Me,” “I Don’t Know,” and “I Don’t Care.” Matt spoke for 7:05 minutes.
Both contestants did a great job and were rewarded with laughter! Each met the timing requirements and did an excellent job with the opening, body, and closing. Not too surprising, we had a tie! The secret Tie-Breaking Judge was consulted and Matt Greenbergs was declared the winner.
As the winner of the Humorous Speech Contest, Matt will compete at the Area Contest. If Matt is unable to fulfill his speaking engagement, Hannah will compete.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:57pm. Visit our website at
