July 27 Meeting Minutes

Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 7-27-05

Theme: The Civil War
WOW: Haberdashery – a store that sells men’s and women’s notions such as suspenders, buttons, and thread

The July 27 2005 meeting was called to order at 12:09pm by the Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao.

Century Toastmasters had a fantastic meeting with 14 people in attendance.

President, Joe Stewart, was called to the podium and read the Century Toastmasters Mission Statement.

Toastmaster and VP of Education, Darcy Konold, was introduced to the podium. Darcy discussed the issues our nation faced prior to the Civil War and described the actions that drove the start of the war. Darcy invited the attendees to introduce themselves and to try to use the WOW, haberdashery. Self-introductions took 6:00 minutes.

President, Joe Stewart, presented an Educational Moment regarding the many hats a member wears when fulfilling one of the meeting functions. Over the next several weeks, the Educational Moment will focus each week on one of the meeting functions, such as the Toastmaster or Evaluator. Joe thrilled the crowd with his wide array of hats, including a loud speaker, a table, a timer, a toaster, and a spyglass. Joe spoke for 3:23 minutes.

Secretary, Rhonda Walthall, presented her CTM2 speech, focusing on organization. The title of Rhonda’s speech was “The Need For Speed”. Rhonda shared her first experience in an autocross race in which she finished last place. Rhonda’s speech focused on the enjoyment of the sport of autocross and what a person needs to do to prepare for an autocross. Rhonda spoke for 7:39 minutes.

VP of Membership, Cher Vargas, presented her CTM4 speech, focusing on how to say it. The title of Cher’s speech was “Sunny San Diego”. Cher reminded us of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful, sunny city. She provided example of things to do and places to go to truly enjoy what San Diego has to offer. Cher spoke for 3:30 minutes.

Past President, Dick Larkin, presented his ATMS2 speech, focusing on persuasion. Fellow member Stephen Jaworski assisted Dick. Stephen played the role of an interviewer and Dick played the role of the interviewee. Dick presented a new option for San Diego residents to save money when requesting directory assistance by dialing 1-800-SAN-DIEGO. Dick spoke for 3:13 minutes.

Christina Rivas presented Table Topics. Christina called on three participants, Norma Toothman, Jose De la Torre, and Eric Dzamefe to discuss various Civil War issues, such as what is the lingering impact of the Civil War, what is the current role of the American Red Cross, and what weapons are used today.
Stephen Jaworski served as General Evaluator. VP of Public Relations, Matt Greenbergs, evaluated Rhonda’s speech. Byron Shovlain evaluated Cher’s speech. Hannah Zhao evaluated Dick’s speech. Jose Mascorro was the Grammarian/Ah Counter, and Jose De la Torre was the Timer. Evaluations took 6:22 minutes.

Rhonda Walthall and Dick Larkin tied for Best Speaker. Jose De la Torre won Best Table Topics Speaker. Matt Greenbergs won Best Evaluator.

Dick Larkin presented a beautiful President’s Distinguished Award ribbon to Hannah Zhao. The ribbon will be prominently displayed with our Century Toastmasters’ flag.
