Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 7-13-05
Theme: Earthquake County
WOW: Seismicity – the distribution and frequency of earthquakes and other seismic events
The July 13, 2005 meeting was called to order by the Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao, at 12:05pm.
Century Toastmasters had a fantastic meeting with 21 people in attendance, including two guests.
Toastmaster and President Joe Stewart was introduced to the podium. Joe discussed his experience with earthquakes while living in San Diego County. Joe then invited the attendees to introduce themselves and to describe the seismicity of the area in which they grew up. Self-introductions took TBD minutes.
VP of Membership, Cher Vargas, presented an Educational Moment regarding how to give effective evaluations. Cher emphasized that as an evaluator, we should read the speech objective in the manual, listen carefully, be specific, speak for ourselves (not the group), and conclude on a positive note. Cher urged us all to sign up to be an evaluator. Cher spoke for 2:53 minutes.
Hannah Zhao presented her ATMB/3 speech, focusing on demonstration. The topic of Hannah’s speech was “The History of Chinese Script”. Hannah demonstrated examples of Chinese scripts that dated back 6000 years and how some of the scripts had changed to current day. Hannah focused on 4 out of the 6 methods used for writing Chinese script, including: 1) Pictographs, 2) Indicatives, 3) Ideographs, and 4) Phonetic Semantic Compounds. Hannah spoke for 12:56 minutes. Contact Hannah if you are interested in learning more about Chinese script.
Dick Larkin presented his ATMS/1 speech, focusing on a positive aspect of Toastmasters. The title of Dick’s speech was “How Happy Are You?” Dick emphasized the following points: Your happiness is directly related to the amount of control you feel and feeling in control comes only through confidence. Confidence comes from over coming fears by setting and achieving goals. Dick recommended that we surround ourselves with people who support and encourage us to grow. He also encouraged us to set and achieve our goals and then set a new goal after we achieve a goal. Dick helped us to be aware of how Toastmasters helps us to become confident by setting and achieving goals. Dick spoke for 8:58 minutes.
Stephen Jaworski presented his CTM/9 focusing on Persuading With Power. The title of Stephen’s speech was “Local Economics, the Princess Effect, and the 25 Cent Solution”. Stephen began his speech with examples of how men have valued a woman’s affection over money by buying them expensive gifts or going to extreme measures to gain their affection. Stephen used examples to persuade the listeners to be wise with their spending and not to get caught up in spending more than you can afford. He urged us to not spend money on material things if our finances are not in order. Stephen provided examples of how to save money. Stephen spoke for 8:15 minutes. Contact Stephen if you wish to know why your Dave & Buster’s card is worth more today than when you bought it.
Jose Del LaTorre served as General Evaluator. VP of Education, Darcy Konold evaluated Hannah’s speech. Jim Tucker evaluated Dick’s speech. VP of Public Relations, Matt Greenbergs, evaluated Stephen’s speech. Dough Goodman was the Grammarian/Ah Counter, and Secretary, Rhonda Walthall, was the Timer. Evaluations took 8:10 minutes.
