Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 7-20-05
Theme: A Giant Leap for Mankind
WOW: Moonwalk – to go on foot across the moon’s surface; a gliding disco dance
The July 20 2005 meeting was called to order at 12:05pm by the Sergeant-At-Arms, Hannah Zhao.
Century Toastmasters had a fantastic meeting with only 10 people in attendance.
Toastmaster Matt Greenbergs was introduced to the podium. Matt discussed his first memory of the Moonwalk disco dance and invited the attendees to introduce themselves and to describe their first memory of the Moonwalk, whether it was the actual moonwalk performed by Neil Armstrong or whether it was the disco dance. Self introductions took 8:00 minutes.
VP of Education, Darcy Konold, presented an Educational Moment regarding how much information was available in the Toastmasters magazine. Darcy brought in a stack of Toastmasters magazines dating back to 1990. She invited the members to review the old magazines for articles pertinent to where each of us were in our Toastmasters’ education. Darcy spoke for 2:47 minutes.
Jimmie Webb presented his CTM/2 speech, focusing on organization. The title of Jimmie’s speech was “The First Star”. Jimmie shared a memory from when he was 11 years old in which he wished upon the first star of the night. He wished that everyone would go to heaven. Jimmie’s speech focused on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jimmie used good vocal variety and body language to express his passion for the subject. Jimmie spoke for 4:44 minutes.
Molly Frisbie presented her CTM/10 speech, focusing on inspiration. The title of Molly’s speech was “Have No Fear”. Molly emphasized the following points: “Hitch your wagon to a star” – humans can achieve whatever they want. “Always do what you are afraid to do” – separate your fears from real obstacles. Molly shared her fears of starting a new job right out of college in a new town away from her family and boyfriend. “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”. “If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning”. “Every man I meet is in some way my superior” – Molly shared that she felt relief in this belief that she did not need to be the best at everything. “Unless you try to do something that you have not already mastered, you will never grow” – do not be afraid of failure. “Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood” – do not feel guilty about being happy about change. “The reward of a thing well done is to have it done” – don’t get bogged down. “Make the most of yourself for that is all there is of you” – don’t be afraid of your own potential. “Be careful what you set your heart on for it will surely be yours” – do not be afraid to accomplish everything you have set out to do in life. Molly spoke for 10:00 minutes.
Jude Awiyilika presented Table Topics. Jude asked four participants, Stephen Jaworski, Darcy Konold, Norma Toothman, and Hannah Zhao to expand on their first impression of the moonwalk or to give an example of an insurmountable event that they or someone they knew had overcome. Jude then entertained us with his moonwalking skills. Table Topics took 8:51 minutes.
Secretary Rhonda Walthall served as General Evaluator. Hannah Zhao evaluated Jimmie’s speech. Stephen Jaworski evaluated Molly’s speech. Joe Stewart was the Grammarian/Ah Counter, and Norma Toothman was the Timer. Evaluations took 7:55 minutes.
