Century Toastmasters Meeting Minutes 8-25-04 Humorous Speech contest
MEETING THEME: Olympics of Laughter (Humorous Speech Contest)
WOW: Fun
Doug Goodman served as Toastmaster for the Humorous Speech Contest and did a good job of explaining all the rules. As competition gets to the higher level of area, division, and district, the rules are more important. All contestants were well informed of the rules and played by them. But hey, we didn't want to be too serious, after this was the humorous speech contest. Well, we do have our share of jokers in the club and they were on this day.
First speaker Julio Sanchez talked of tamales, Peru, and growing old. Humor depends on your point of reference and the growing old schtick had all of us laughing knowing we were part of it.
Second speaker Dick Larkin spoke of how a vacation can go awry with dislocated thumbs, flying luggage, and no horse rides. If you've noticed, Dick just got the thumb support cast off. Knowing that you can laugh at yourself is the best medicine.
Third speaker Evonne Spineto had another subject many can relate to in child rearing and the cute things that children can say or do. The curse of your mother will be handed down to all generations in having children that end up just like you were.
Fourth speaker Stephen Jaworski related his adventures as a high school basketball official, complete with whistle. He told us of some of the things fans, parents, and players tell him, within the decorum of a Toastmasters meeting. Being an official is no popularity contest.
Joe Stewart served as timer, with minimum timer of guest, Andy Crabtree. Cher Vargas served as Chief Judge and calculated that Julio won the majority of the audiences laughs, with Evonne winning second and Stephen placing third. Julio will go on to the next level of competition representing the best club around, Century Toastmasters. Good luck to Julio and thanks for the yucks from all contestants.
